I would say we have a 60-40 mix at my local club.
another club I attend is maybe 75-25
the thing that annoys me msot is that we don't drill subs, escapes and rolls enough, it is more like look at this and then we have newaza randori
It may change now thou because we are going to have a sort of inter-club newaza league, too many of the oldtimers bitched about comp being too hard on their bodies (:

Thrawn, yep same here, as the comp got closer we would go more tachiwaza.
Yeahbee, same here as well but I think its the time thing. We were generally drilling 10 reps/n switch in stand drills and 5 on ground. But the time on ground doing 5 took alot longer than doing 10 on feet...hence we could cover 2 stand tech for 1 ground tech still equalling 50/50 in time.
The ground randori since 1982 was exactly like it is when at bjj in terms of fighting just not including illegal techs. Almost always started in gaurd. Just a 6 minute roll till ippon and restart.

hmmm....makes me wonder if judoka that don't teach them just don't know the names.
Should look in the book and quiz them. LOL

Olympic style clubs, yes.
As for the answer you're looking for, I'm not sure. Infact I'm entirely the wrong person to ask, as it was you who reffered me to my first club over a year ago. So I'm still fairly new.

Thats a problem though. I'm all about tradition, but not knowing the Japanese name for a sweep shouldn't stop you from teaching it.
Take pins for example, my coach knows the name for it, but its easier to shout "North South" and have the fighter recognize it rather than "Kami-shio-gatame". He expects the Dans to know the traditional Japanese names, and the Brown Belts to know some of them, but piling all that Japanse on a junior kyu will have them spending more time learning the names than actually doing the technique.

'Kesa' was better than 'head and arm'. Kata better than...
Agreed tho, they should call it what they like.
