Training No Gi and Gi at same time

I've been doing MMA training for about 9 months( just for fun) But I now also am going to start BJJ at the same time. I want to improve my groundwork but their just isn't enough time or I don't have the energy to really work my ground stuff since we normally do it after our stand and takedowns.

Anyway here's the question. Since I'll still be doing the MMA thing whats your opinion on the BJJ as far as getting really into all the gi techiniques since I can't use them when I train MMA. I'm doing BJJ to try and improve my techinique , but don't want to get sucked into only knowing how to get an arm bar by grabbing a sleeve or using a lot of gi holds for control. But I also don't want get totally tooled everyday becuase I'm not using a lot of the techinques that BJJ with a gi provides. Not that I'm afraid of getting tapped cuase I get tapped enough as is. I just don't want to waste time getting the crap kicked out of me if its not going to help my MMA groundwork.

Just looking for some insight into anyone that done both at the same time to get a feel for what I should expect as far as my progression goes.

Isn't there a bjjer at your mma club?

Haven't been able to catch them recently to talk to them about it yet. Just looking for some opinions. They are also the same guys that teach us most of our ground stuff in the MMA class. I've watched them roll in the BJJ seesions and they attack and defend cpmpletely diferent than when they are with us. Which is what got me thinking that since my groundwork is still not that solid would it be an issue to do both at the same time.

I see, you mean for extra work with them outside of mma. I think it will only make you better, easy. You are doing mma so you can keep that in mind when training and they might even help you with that if they recognize you from mma. Good crosstraining nonetheless.

Alot of people train and compete gi and no-gi all the time.

Training with the Gi makes your no gi grappling even better.

Ya I agree with Cynic, Ive been doing CSW *combat Submission Wrestling about 9 months, and while my ground game is ok, I believe doing GI also will help me alot, its not even really about learning the GI Chokes and stuff, it will just help you over all.

I agree, I dont see why people think the Gi will hurt your no gi game. The top submission grapplers all train with a Gi. If you can defend yourself with a gi then you should have no problem without it. Try this, wear a Gi and your partner no gi and dont use your gi for any offense reason.

Gi grappling makes your defense better imo. you become so used to escaping bad positions like mount and side control with the gi, where your opponent has a lot of handles, once you take the gi off these escapes become even easier. A real cool challenge is to wear a gi and have your opponent wear no gi in training, he can grab your gi, but you cant use it against them, it forces you to be very technical.

I think that it really makes your offensive better relatively. With friction comes control and in the end more risk. More risk is what makes offence.

I'm not soo much concerned with my defense. I know that the gi will help my defense dramtically. Its my offense that I was thinking about. I don't want to be the new know it all jackass that goes and basically ignores the instructor when they are saying to use the gi grips for subs and setups. But I also don't want to get to dependent on having a gi to be able to pull off a sub. I've sat in and watchd a lot of the training sessions( we share the same gym space) and I see a lot of things that I know I couldn't do without a gi.

I know that it will help both in the end. Just wanted to get opinions if anyone knew of any pitfalls of doing both at the same time coming from a relative novice experience level.
