I've never been particularly good at that kimura reversal a few of you have written about. Especially with this guy. I've thought about it in the past but then when I tried I was too weak (maybe?) to get his arm up. Although that's been the case with weaker (physically and skillwise) opponents in the past. I don't know if I'm missing a step in the technique or not.

I'll have to rewatch that Maia clip when I get home. It's the one I referenced in my opening post. I was just glacing at it and I noticed he was basing with his right arm on the ground. I can't recall what I'm doing with my arm when I start walking to the opponent's head but maybe that's what I've somehow missed.

Still havent had the opportunity to roll with the guy since I posted this!

One thing to remember, the shoulder lock counter attack only works as a submission if he keeps his hands locked too long. If he's a 4 stripe blue he'll certainly realize what you're doing before you actually finish the shoulder lock. He'll release the Kimura grips, and your goal is still achieved, and he should be somewhat more cautious about grabbing your arm after that as well.
