Top BJJ Players are Swimming

I just read this article by Carlos Valente:

http://www.ultimategrapplingmag.com/content/view/48/46/

Then I read this interview in Gracie Mag with Minotauro:

Additionally, Margarida said this:

Maybe I should dust off my old speedos and start doing some laps in my local pool!

Swimming is awesome exercise. I used to be on the swim team in high school. Swimming works your upper body, and is a cardio crusher. Totally easy on all your joints.

The problem with swimming is that it's so hard to get a good workout. For swim team, we would be required to swim different routines within certain time limits. For example, 10 100's on a 1:30. Sticking to something like that will give you a good workout. Just haplessly swimming laps will not do much.

I was also on my high school swim team. Unfortunately, that was more than a decade ago. With the recent southern CA heatwave, I'm seriously thinking about taking it up again.

I agree that the only way to push yourself with a swim workout is via intervals. I remember doing 10 100 IMs in 1:30. In any event, it sounds to me like they're using swimming as more of a recovery exercise than a hardcore cardio activity.

It means 10 sets of 100 meters (or yards, depending upon your pool).

Our swimming pool is only 25 metres long

Swimming's great though. I could stay in a pool all day.

That is fine. The average length of a pool in America is also 25 meters. To accomplish 10 100's, you would simply swim 4 laps every set. 40 laps total.

Minotauro did aquarobics and laps last year at the BTT camp every day. When he's at home in Brazil and when he goes to Japan with his brother they'll hold on around each other's next and take turns doing laps with the added weight.

Swimming is one of the best exercises you can do. Zero impact, whole body workout, great cardio.
