Tomoe Nage Takedown Review Thread

I got an ippon today at class shiai with this version of Tomoe Nage. However, I don't think I am conscious of all of the details. I just do the move and it works. I'd like some additions and/or tip for doing this move.

  1. You have double sleeve grips. Uke is pushing into you and slightly bent over.

  2. Tug down on both sleeves. Uke reacts by stiffening upright and freezing.

  3. Step in to the side of the triangle slightly with your left foot.

  4. Bring your right foot to his stomach with your toes pointed towards his head if possible.

  5. Fall down to your back right under his feet. Don't fall back too far away. You have to be under him. This is the most important part.

  6. As you roll back, pull with his sleeves and push with your foot so he goes up and over.

  7. Most likely, Uke will try to regain his balance and fall to the side or on top of you. Use your sleeve grips as a steering wheel. If he posts with one hand, pull that sleeve and push with the other to destroy his post and tumble him over that way.

  8. Finish with mount.

In wrestling, I like to do this move from an overhook (on the opposite side as the leg I extend to his stomach) and a collar or inside-elbow grip. I forget what the name of the takedown in folkstyle is called, though.

I have had good luck with this takedown. Do you have any advice on good setups? I usually try to push hard into the guy and then whip under as he pushes back. What do you think?

A good set up for Tomeo Nage is Osoto Gari, it forces them to come forward into the throw.

Here is a tip taught me by my Judo instructor that is very essential:

when you do the throw, pull on his arms as if you want to pull them up and over your head, don't pull his arms to your chest.

arms up and behind you

Great advice! Keep it coming!

Since I don't do judo, I prefer to use footsweeps instead of the big reaps. I guess you call it kosoto gari in judo. I could probably use that to set up the tomoe.

Also be sure to hang onto your opponent or else they will go flying into a wall!

Kashiwazaki used a similar double sleve grip in his famous version of tomoe-nage.

IIRC he at least attempts in his 1981 World Champs final... there used to be a clip on youtube not sure if it is still there you could search it

Of course its cool, on the street, where you can really f#ck someone up with it, but at my dojo at least, I would get in trouble for vaulting someone into a wall and watching them slide down the wall headfirrst like in a cartoon.

Thanks. LOL Kashiwazaki had no fear of the yoki shiho oil check katame. But that was a cool tomoe nage.
