Icon7 Tips on holding the *side mount* and mount?

I practice NO-GI.

I very rarely get to spar some one who is not 20+ pounds heavier then me. I am usually able to achieve dominant position such as side mount or mount, but sadly cant hold on to it for very long facing these big guys.

They tend to just roll be over even tho I am almost sprawling holding on to their neck and hand. lol

Same with Mount I break their grips but their bridge is so explosive against me being so light that I eventually get bucked off.

The only time they can get rid of me is when I get their back. Then I am there like glue trapping their arms with my legs. lol. sweet revenge!

Can any one provide some tips for holding down big guys in Mount and Side Mount?

I'm going to add to the best answer so far, from my own experience.

Counter hip movement through positioning, mobility and pressure.

Knee on the belly instead of the usual 100 kilo side control.

High mount instead of mount.

I agree with countering hip movement. This is a difficult subject to explain, so I HIGHLY recommend you go to class from this.

In general, stay mobile as well. My opinion is that a guy will get out sooner or later if he has decent know-how in escaping these positions. Jump to the other side if he hip escapes on you in side control. Use North South. Use Kesa Gatame. Use Reverse Kesa Gatame. Use Knee on Belly. Know your options.

There is alot to it but once you get it down it doesnt really mater big he is once you get him in mount and you want to hold it chances are he isnt getting out.

Usually when I get to mount I immediately grapevine and let him struggle to get out. Once he works to neutralize my hooks I then go straight to locking my ankles slamming my hips down knocking out his breath. When he starts trying to post/push up on my hips I pluck his hands away. He bridges I base. He post/pushes I pluck. He tries to rool I take the back. He turns to side I go into technical mount and likely set up armbar, side choke or take back. Rinse repeat until he is submitted, gassed from the pressure/escape attempts or just plain frustrated. Then I unlock my ankles if still in that form of mount which is nice and smothering and work up higher to open up subs. Any chance of him escaping boom I slam back down into grapvines and work my way back up.

Thats the majority of my mount strategy and generally works pretty well even against guys 60 lbs or more than me.

Sorry that was just from the mount. From side mount its all about neutralizing the hips and transitioning when needed. There are many forms of side mount and I find against big guys the key to holding it is to be able to quickly transition between the various forms of it as he works escapes. Most escapes he does can be countered by transitioning into another form of side mount if needs be or even north south, mount or even take the back. Constant pressure, neutralize his hips, no space.
