Starting at Gracie Jiu Jitsu school next week...

...in Hattiesburg Mississippi. Just so I know what to expect, can anyone tell me if the Gracie schools employ some of the traditional martial arts gym rules such as bowing, adressing the instructor by his title, ect...? Thanks for any help you guys can give me. I can't wait to get started!

depends on the teacher. Just go along, be respectful and friendly, and try to leave your ego at the door (which is easier said than done).

Above all else- enjoy it.

I used to live in Biloxi. That doesn't answer your questions, but I just had to throw it out there.

That is a Pedro Sauer school correct? Don't know a lot about them. Have never been against any of them in tourneys. I am at Gracie South in Jackson.
From what I hear, they are a pretty good group of people.

I think it all depends on the school. I know that I usually bow when I come on and off the mat but sometimes I don't and some guys don't do it at all. No one really cares at my school and I think it's more of what YOU feel comfortable with. I usually call my instructor "profe" (short for professor) or "Fabio" and he couldn't care less either way in my opinion. Other schools can and will be different so I'd just casually ask around during your first couple of classes.

"Hey, do you call him sensei or teacher?"
"No, I call him Bill."

Just take your read from the rest of the class.

It's called Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Please don't be taken in by the egomaniacal Gracie family.

if its taught by a gracie, its called gracie JJ, no joke they have the name locked up as their own.

to the TS most BJJ are very informal. so just follow the lead of the others in your class like ninja said.

You're right about them calling it Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I got to Gracie school, but everyone is just as laid back there as anywhere else I have been.
