So I started judo yesterday...

I LOVED it!

I am definitely going back. I can see this going to add significant value to my grappling game. I just wanted to say thanks from the guys here for inspiring me to give this a go and for the good advice.

So, what did you learn first session?

Nice to hear you enjoyed yourself. Some people just dont take to judo, others do. If you enjoyed it, you are probably one of the latter .......

Btw, the friend I mentioned is going to Caufield Judo Club.

Ahh ok. I think it might be affiliated. I'm over at Clayton. About 15min drive from Caufield down the Princes Fwy.

Basic drills, one of the seniors showed me some conditioning drills he uses at home (this one guy is fucking awesome - a lean 80-ish kg, in his 40s but insane power and technique), as well as going over basic throws and concepts. Nothing fancy. I'm not good with the japanese names so I can't recall them.

We did some basic hip tosses and arm drag throws (best way I can explain it). Also a good way of getting the person to move the head if they go to their stomach in tournament (I'm automatically thinking of ways to apply this stuff to BJJ and its pretty good).

The guys went at a very gentle pace, no rough stuff (which I was worried about) and despite the obvious skill level of some of the senior guys, they really enjoy working with junior belts. They obviously just go with the flow and love getting a chance to work technique, even with us noobs. I love the attitude of the people there and the way they teach so I will definitely be a regular there.

I heart Judo. I also swear by it. I've been to one judo school where they taught no ground game unless you were really advanced. Be careful about places like that.

I took Judo until Orange Belt. I entered one tourney and god 1st place. I dunno i wasnt nuts about it. I think my teacher was more focused on Olympic style than anything else. I also didnt like the fact that they didnt allow you to sprawl at all in competition.

However it is definately offers some great techniques to learn for a well rounded ground/clinch game.

Dont allow you to sprawl?

You ARE allowed to sprawl to block an attack - you just cant just sprawl & drop to the ground all the time to avoid an impending attack, nor I think can you grab your opponent and just sprawl to drag him to the ground.
