shawn williams/hollywood bjj

haven't seen much about hollywood bjj, except the occasional positive comment on the boards. Does anyone train there? I've heard the teacher is quite good, but haven't heard much else...

I'm interested in bjj for basic fitness and to learn the style for recreation more than anything. I used to wrestle and see they have no-gi classes, which I think I'd prefer.

Can anyone offer any comments/advice about the place? Is it good for novices and "casual" students (i.e., not sure I want to get into tournaments any time soon). Or about doing no-gi without a gi-base?

Thanks in advance!

Shawn Williams is a BJJ instructor so expect to see more gi classes. I'd do them if I were you. Shawn Williams is an excellent teacher as well as grappler. He basically invented the "New Yorker" (sorry for the gay name) and was known for using it in competition. His school is relatively new yet a lot of guys on here say that it's already the top school as far as competition which says a lot. You'll be in great hands with Shawn whether if it's for competition or recreational reasons. The guy is the fuckin man simply put.

So would you recommend starting with gi before transitioning to no-gi? Could you elaborate, please? Or to do both (schedule permitting)? He has a schedule posted, and I think I could do both.

I've definitely heard that he is an effective teacher and a congenial guy as well--that and the proximity to my home are almost enough. Beverly Hills BJJ is nearby, too, but for some reason I like what I've heard and like the no-gi option...

Thanks!

Many will agree, many will disagree...but I think starting in the Gi is best.

you really cannot go wrong with Shawn.

I do not train there. Sorry for the misunderstanding. But I know his teaching is top-notch.

Shawn is a great guy. He's really funny and charismatic. I've heard from many people that his instruction is top notch. His school is on the rise right now. They have a solid group of tough guys and will probably start making some noise in the tournament scene in So. Cal.

If you do stop by the school, tell this short guy named Jun (he'll probably playing butterfly guard) that Half-Guard Mike said hi.

i train there. been there for a bit now. trained at a couple of other places but this place is very good. if you wanna know anymore pm me. he does offer quite a bit of nogi. i do both. i like both. goto his page at hollywoodbjj.com to check it out.

what i like about the place is his instruction and most of the guys are pretty cool. for fitness it doesnt matter if you do gi or nogi. starting off with the gi is the most recommended way because it is slower pace so you think and become more technical. nogi can be very technical too, but most guys feel gi builds your basics better. if you wrestled you should pick it up pretty quick.
