Saulo's turtle survival question

Hey all, in JJ University, White Belt chapter, Saulo shows the survival posture for when someone has your back on top of you. I know that probably a million of you have a different idea of what to do when you're turtled like this, but I was wondering about what SAULO wants us to do with our hands. Are both hands on the right side or is one hand on each side of the face? If they are both on the right, what exactly prevents the top person from sneaking in with the left hand to choke? The book doesn't quite offer a good close-up of the hands.

Any ideas?

I think I remember in the book the hands are on the same side.

I think he covers the same hand position here: YouTube - Saulo Ribeiro - Jiu-Jitsu Revolution 1, The Back Position except not from the turtle. Its like 4:00 mins in i think? I didnt watch it recently and I havent looked at the book today so don't quote me.

Maybe try and protect your neck on both sides? IDK though because I haven't seen that book.

both hands on one side= really good defense on one side and bad defense on the other side

1 hand on each side= decent defense

u give a lil u take a lil, dont try to remember steps in a book, just my opinion

in the book is saulo just protecting neck from a specific choke or just any choke coming?

sounds like he is anticipating something specific

If i remember correctly, Saulo defends his neck with 1 hand.

The close arm to the person on top is extended out, waiting to time and grab the leg or the hip. You can see him set up his "survival" posture in his turtle defense video below.

YouTube - Saulo Ribeiro, Jiu-Jitsu Revolution 2, Clock Choke Escape

I personally don't use this survival posture and haven't been successful with it, but this is what he describes in his book...and it is SAULO after all.

Thanks, all.

hooch, I was leaning towards the one side, thanks for confirming. Not sure why that and not both sides, but that's fine.

makeutap, I def agree with not trying to learn this all from a book. I'm goin to class as much as I can with Baret Yoshida (who kicks major @$$ BTW), and doing everything he says FIRST.

It's good to see and learn from as many sources as possible, too.

The double hand thing comes from his Judo I think. He does it in his book and DVDs from time to time. Even if you just leave your hands there its still hard for them to get a useful collar grip except for a same side collar grip which is no better than them just grabbing the back of your collar which you have no way of preventing.

Saulo's stuff can be hard to learn from as it gives you the impression those positions are static but they aren't. You still have to hand fight a bit from these positions and if the opponent really starts attacking hard for a grip that is when you have an excellent opportunity to escape. Because you aren't using power to stop them attacking you they are more likely to attack and then you have an escape opportunity. Whereas if you just grab their hands you are stuck in that position as much as you are stopping them attacking you.

Also the simplest move is your best friend here. Bump when they attack for a good grip. A lot of attacks on these inferior positions can be stopped by a correct bump and that is often the first step in escaping.
