Russian belt-grip judo

I have recently become interested in the belt grip approach. It seems to me that it would work quite well against the "hunched over" BJJ stance. Has anybody used this grip to good effect? What do you think of it as an anti-BJJ grip?

To me the Russian grip is not a belt grip per say

like this you mean?

but I guess if you can reach down to the belt all the better

Osotogari, HArai Goshi, Soto MAkikomi and dif sacrifice throws are great from this position, sacrifice throws that easily follows thru into mount position,

I also like to just grip the belt on the side that you would grip the lapel, gives alotta oppurtunity to power moves

That's the one. Ideally you get the belt, and the other hand can grab either the sleeve or (even better) the pant. So you end up with a super deep grip on the guy.

It seems like you can get some disgusting throws if you get the full grip established.

I've used it a couple times and scored with a couple Tani's. The O and Ko Uchi Garis are there as well. All in all, I guess it depends on who I fight.

Last tourney I got called for a pistol grip while using it though.

That's the thing though, they don't call illegal grips in BJJ (except for gripping inside the gi or pant sleeve). So I figure you should take advantage of some of the effective grips that may be more difficult to get or illegal in judo.

my two favorite throws from that grip is the tai otosh and harai goshi. My instructor showed us both of those and they were so powerful and i loved them. try them out.

I'm 6'1 and have really long arms. So I think it's a potentially useful grip for me to use against those shorter, crouching opponents.
