How common are rolling attacks against the turtle?
One of my instructors is an old-school Carlson guy (6th degree BB,) and he is teaching us a tonne of rolls against the turtle: into side control, into collar chokes, into armbars.
I had never really seen them before - but I am just a relatively new blue belt. I used one against a blue belt while I was visiting another city and he had never seen it before, either.
In one of his blogs, Stephan Kesting talks about visiting our academy. The day after his seminar, he took a class with us (Stephan is an awesome guy.) Here is what he had to say:
Grappling Tips Newsletter
"One cool thing that happened that night is that Alexandre Penao showed us a technique that none of us had ever seen before.
It was a cool rolling choke against the turtle position. Then he showed us how to use that choke to set up an entry to the mount and choke the guy out from there. This second technique was also entirely new to me.
Now I've been doing BJJ a long time. And I've been practicing other grappling arts for even longer. But I hadn't seen this stuff before. Not in person. Not on Youtube. Not in my extensive library of books and DVDs."
Are these techniques uncommon? I can tell you they are practical for competition. I cannot find many similar techniques on youtube or whatever.
Is anyone interested in a video of these? Penao has already agreed to demonstrate the techniques for a youtube video, but there will be little in the way of explanation, since my his English is as poor as my Portuguese.
