Rhadi Ferguson on judokas ground game
"Before Jiujitsu I had 0% mat skills. I sucked on the mat. Jiujitsu single handedly helped me get to the Olympics, period - end of story. Lloyd Irvin taught me a great deal and catered my game to judo. Admittedly, I have a sport BJJ game, not necessarily a sub game, but I subbed most of my judo opponents toward the end of my career.
Also, don't be fooled by what you see in the United States. The top level and top tier judoka have decent matwork. I didn't say great, but they could definitely hold their own. Jimmy Pedro is a phenom, but his judo game is catered for judo. Out of all the judo guys I will say that Flavio Canto is the BEST that I've ever seen on the ground!
When I was training for the Olympics at International judo camps, I had no problem during the newaza sessions - none. Overall BJJ is superior when it comes to matwork (this is no secret) as Judo is superior when it comes to throws, foot sweeps, etc.,.
"Taylor Takata really needs to trust his ground work more in Judo matches. I've rolled with him before and his ground work is solid. I would feel comfortable saying he's a solid purple, without a doubt. I would like to see him finish more people on the mat, especially in the U.S. "

Prepare to be flamed, no scorched, by the judo nuthuggers. The truth can be a bitter pill to swallow.

You trying to stir up crap or what? There's no way Ferguson didn't learn mat skills while learning judo. Maybe it was just him.

In the United States? My sensei is with the USJF. I learn decent skills. Judoka are well rounded. In fact, he says it himself right there. Just b/c Ferguson didnt' take to judo newaza well and needed BJJ doesn't mean judo guys suck on the ground. BJJ is superior on the mat.. Wow.. So? Big news?
What was the point of this post? Tell me.

Yes.
For Rhadis 'matwork'.
He means 'sport grappling'. That is where it is beneficial to be on your back.
I knew that from last day judo to 1st day bjj. Hey, you can score with a sweep and no 'real' reward for top comparatively.
So, I, Q mystic, say Rhadi is..........correct.
Nobody will generally beat BJJ at grappling. And none could catch up with their enthusiasm and I say awesome.
But, still, a top newaza judoka over a top bjjer. In grappling even.
Get that? I am serious.
