Review: Mastering The Rubber Guard DVD Set

Review: Mastering The Rubber Guard DVD Set by Spencer Cooper (killer_kicks88)

I’m not going to review this in sections as I usually do, because I already have a MTRG review out for the book (found here mastering the rubber guard.....). The content for the book and dvd set is the same. With that out of the way, let’s get started.

I write reviews for good products, so the quality of this set is not in question. However, these (and all other victorybelt products I’ve seen) are extremely well done. The extras are very entertaining and there is tons of rolling footage on them. Pieces like “Eddie and Dean talk shop” are not only very fun to watch, but very educational. Overall I would choose this dvd set over any other that I own (and I’m a bit spoiled in that department). It’s that good. The movements are very simple to learn with multiple camera angles, helpful dialogue and no wasted space for slow-mo replays (you DO have a chapter button, don’t you?). If you’ve got the cash, I don’t mind boldly saying that, with the book and dvds together, you will have a very complete bottom game. Do yourself a favor and buy these dvds.

P.S…..Joey Karate is hilarious! (if you’ve seen the dvds, you’ll know what I mean).

i have it. Clearly Eddie is a great communicator and the actual technique portion of the set is great and amazing.

That being said:

Other than his butterfly and half guard techniques, you hear "you need to be flexible, or flexibility helps" extremely often in his set. His spiderweb attacks IMHO require a high lvl of leg dexterity that i don't think that people will get no matter how much they stretch.

ALSO, the set is over a hundered dollars and damm near 1/3 of it is useless shit that you are paying for. His skits are not funny (at least to me) and his long fucken interviews on himself and his "humor" is unbearable. At the end of the day Eddie has charged the jiu jitsu comsumer for his bullshit. There are a hundred ways eddie could have put all that nonsese for free or on the web. But no, he decided that he wanted a 3 dvd set that easily could have fit into two or even one dvd. Let's compare eddie to saulo or marcelo both with 5~6 dvds and charge around 150. Is eddie bravo a great teacher on dvd? Yes. IS the dvd needlessly expensive and long? Yes.

I have MTRG and MTT I just need the MTRG DVDS and then I believe he is coming out with MTT DVDs?

I can easily justify spending the 120 bucks I just need the money

I personally have watched the set once (haven't been motivated since). I found that the production as far as sound levels was shoddy. Having to constantly turn up and down the volume. The permalink to the various myspace sites for his hobby music groups was a bit, no, a lot amateurish. I felt a bit "had". Like I payed $100 for DVDs of his music (which I don't find at all inspiring), and the BJJ was the extras/bonus materials.

All in all the actual instructional content was good, the half guard stuff was excellent. The dvd set could have easily been 2 dvds or less if not for all the other "stuff".

This is not a set for the casual watcher, you really must be 100% on board the eddie bravo bus to truly appreciate the set as a whole. Otherwise you will find yoruself riding the menus hard dodging "punk'd" type bits, eddie bravo ego feeding sketches, and watching him down ludicrous amounts of supplements, and smoking a bunch of cheeba.

The set is not bad, don't get me wrong, but for me did not even begin to live up to the pre release hype.

I just bought these DVDs, they should be here tomorrow. The trailer I saw on youtube does not look so bad.

If you want to learn his style of jiu jitsu, I would recommend this set. The DVDs make it easier to really see the small nuances in all of his techniques. I am not promoting The Rubber Guard as the best type of jiu jitsu, but if you are wanting to learn this does a great job in explaining his system. As far as the skits go, I don't think they detract from the set, there is still plenty of material if you want to skip that stuff. Although I think Joey Karate is funny.
