Because..>SURELY...no one in this day and age is dumb enough to claim they are a black belt unless they totally are, because it is OH SO easy to verify the facts. I mean other than the countless humiliated.....no one is this stupid.

Um, no. Time is but one small part of determining whether one deserves promotion or not. Skill is the primary criteria, though time-in-rank (i.e. "You've been a white belt for how long?") and dedication (i.e. "You think my instruction and my style sucks, but you want me to promote you?) are important.

i have been training for five years. i split training between brazil, los angeles, and new york.

helio gracie promoted me.

I've never heard of someone who outranks the instructor attend a school regularly. I've seen pepole visit and train for mat time but by no means actualy ATTEND the school.
