Question For Judo Guys By Drew Foster
Posted by Drew Foster: I've noticed that my Uchimata and Harai Goshi are just like the Camarillo brothers' and Jimmy Pedro's etc. I don't mean this to brag. But what I mean is, them, and myself, all have the same Kuzushi and Tsukuri for both throws. The ONLY difference between the two throws for me, and dave C, etc. is where my sweeping leg rises (in between the legs for Uchimata, or into the front thigh for Harai). In fact, many times I go for harai and their legs will widen and I'll hit Uchimata. Vice-versa happens as well and I end up with Harai.
I'm guessing part of this is due to the "hip" Uchimata that is so fashionable these days. rarely to I do the strictly leg to inner thigh variation. I always go in deep with my hips and maintain strong chest-to-chest contact. Dan Cam. even posted hee that he enters like Harai for his Uchimatas.
Am I wrong on this? i figure since world-class guys zkuzushi and fit-in the same way that what I'm doing is acceptable. Anyone else experience this?
IChinaMan, how about you? I know Uchimata is your fav, and we've takd about the hip method being our favorite.
Thanks fellas!

I am the opposite differnt tsukuri and kuzashi
My Uchi is forward down and to the same leg I am reaping
Haraiup forwardand to the side I am reaping, I mostly do my harai from a russian grip thou
I very very rarely take my arm behind their back for the uchi or the "regular" harai jsut lapel grip with the elbow going into their armpit perhaps

Yeah I do russian or rear collar grip for both. I am more asking about hip placement, b/c I do the same arm kuzushi as you. But my hips in harai rae more like uki goshi and my hips in Uchimata are a little further out.
Am I being confusing?
Watch Jimmy Pedros or Dave Camarillos UM and HG. That's how I throw mine. That's ok right? That they're both so similar? I don't kow hy I'm asking this question. I usually don't doubt my 2 favorite moves...

My harai is closer to an osoto gari than an uchimata.
It's fast, and I often am going for an osoto, the guy steps the wrong way in his escape attempt, and he get's caught by the reaping leg harai goshi style.
My uchimata is slow and laborious. ken ken style. I hook ocuhi gari to start, turn, start lifting the leg, hop, hop...and over we go...
So for me they are not at all alike, but that's because I'm slow and unathletic.
I think your "dilemma" is actually a sign that you're doing them well IMO.

My Uchi is very little hip
If it is a smooth motion that gives you similar results then it is okey, or rahter it is as it should be you do waht works for you
Are you talkng about shia/randori or just "kata" form?
Because when instructing you have to be as neutral as possible because not everybody does it the same way but you have to have a general grasp of the concept before you adapt it

The fashion for which uchimata to do varies from decade to decade (its switched back and forth several times in my lifetime). Some of that is, I think, responding to people's defenses - if everyone sees one flavor all the time, they get good at defending against it, so the other becomes more successful ... rinse and repeat. For instance, the delgado counter has changed the way many approach uchimata. Some of it is just people's personal favorites.
Use whatever works for you. I tend to go for the rear leg (almost the stretchy) when cross grip (ie lefty against righty), the inner when normal grip.
