I think it's important to be able to demonstrate techniques in a technical manner on a non-resistant opponent.
The reason? Teaching ability. You have to do it this way (and super slow) when you are teaching a class.
Of course, you also need to be able to pull them off in live drilling and free rolling as well.
I just think it's important to remember that there are a lot of different aspects to BJJ. Competition is one, but there is also self-defense, coaching, and teaching. I think a good purple belt ought to have some skills in all of those.
Belt promotions are based on significantly more than the ability to tap higher ranks at every school I've trained at. Of course, mat performance is a big factor, but it is just one of many factors that goes into the evaluation.
