Purple Belt in BJJ

This has probably been done to death (or maybe not) but it seems to me that the Purple Belt level in BJJ is sort of similar to the black belt in a lot of the other martial arts (Karate and TKD) where you have learned the basics, but the real training and learning to fully command your knowledge begins. From what I've read, technically by the purple level you know virtually all of the moves, however, the big big difference between a purple, brown, and black is the ability to flow everything together. Is this sort of true? Or am I missing something huge?

It really does depend on where you train. Good purples at my academy have the combinations and flow of good brown belts, but are still developing the delicate art of timing and body movement when performing said techniques to be considered a brown belt.

That said, the standards are quite high at my academy so your results may vary.

you never know "all the techniques" not even andre pederneiras knows that. it is true, you learn all the basics, and it's a lot tougher than getting a brown or even a black in most MA's, but it all depends of the teacher, and how old (fisically fit) you are.
