Is it possible to prevent someone from going to NS from Side control?

I was wondering this today.

In side control, or under it, at least you can proactively attempt to get back half or full guard by gettin ya legs to hook him. In NS, however, there is almost nothing you can do if he just keep you pinned there.(And very often the 'escapes' of NS makes you risk getting Kimuraed or guillotined)

when in side control keep an elbow on his hip to prevent him from moving to NS. when NS'd, use your elbows to make space and spin back into side control / halfguard / guard.

sounds easier than it is, but that actually is it.

As he tries to go to the NS from side control stop him by blocking his legs. If you can not then spin into him and roll up to your knees before he gets all the way into the NS position.

I can catch a ankle pick every once in a while too. Not always but sometimes. We got one guy that this is bread and butter. It is tough to get out of once in and in MMA they beat the shit out of your stomach and rib cage. Most guys just give up once caught in NS. Stay strong there and it will frustrate them if they can't get a kimura or guillontine and if you get out of it it is a real moral wrecker.

There is one GREAT north south escape --- the only downside is that it is technically demanding, and you need a lot of flexibility and agility.

You push off the guy's hips until your arms are FULLY extended. Then you vault your legs back over your head, hook it under his hip, and take the back.

I've done it twice, and it is pure BJJ awesomeness when it happens. It will astound your opponent. In fact the second time, I not only took the back, I then rolled under for the triangle, in what I think is my best combo ever -- going from N/S to take the back and finish with a rolling triangle.

It is actually really easy to hit this when the guy is coming from N/S to side control. It is a lot harder to hit it when the guy is sitting in N/S, because his hips are so far.

The only other N/S escape, bridging and pushing the guy off you, doesn't work well unless you are stronger/bigger than him.

This only works if you have long legs....too bad for me I don't.

I normally bridge hard and try to get to the knees. Sometimes it works..sometimes it don't

You don't actually need long legs .... you just need to be somewhat tall. I have short legs, and a long torso.

If you have short legs, however, you can still do it if you can get to one side more than the other --- as when the opponent is transitioning from N/S to side control. That brings his hip within reach, so that you can snag it with your foot. No matter how short you are, you can hit the escape on the transition.

If you are in "pure" N/S, you can artificially bring his hip nearer to you by swinging your legs like a pendulum until you can get to one side, almost as though you are bringing yourself into side control. It's a good technique, though it requires skill.

Barring the "hook the hip" escape, you're basically left with the bridge to your knees escape, which is pretty weak.

dont think you need to be tall either. im short and i got short-ass legs, and every now and then i hit this. provided you can get your shoulder-blades off the ground , anybody should be able to land this from n/s.
