passing guard
I am a ground guy, i can do submissions from the bottom, sidemount, full mount, standing etc. My BIG problem is I suck at passing peoples closed guards. I throw elbows into their thighs, try to pry them apart but nothing seems to work. I know it will be different when punches are actually thrown but it just erks me so much I want some help.

Do you have a problem with breaking the guard, or passing it?

There are a lot of good ways to break the guard.
One of my favorites is the knee in the butt (combat base). Simple to do and it's a good position to pass from (watch out for DLR counters).
Another one of my favorites is double lapel grip + pushing down on the knee. For example, grab both lapels together with your right hand, sprawl back your left leg, and turn your upper body to the left and push down the guy's right knee.
A very simple guard break is to grab the pants on the inside with both hands and push him away from you. This one makes it just about impossible to hold the guard closed, even for guys with strong legs.
Then there are standing guard breaks, where you control an arm and standup. If his guard doesn't break from that, simply push his knee down with your other hand. You really got to watch out for sweeps when you do standing guard breaks, especially if you are going against a guy with a good open guard.
If all else fails, just ask your instructor or some of the higher belts at your gym. They should help you out.

You should be sliding over to crossbody, if you are passing correctly you shouldn't end up in half-guard.
As far as breaking open a guys guard, I often physically reach behind me and unlock his ankles, if is very effective against a super strong guy. You have to maintain good posture and base though, if you lean back when reaching behind you, you will get hip bumped and end up in mount.

When im in someone's guard I like to posture first before anything. I usually try to get my head and spine up straight facing forward. Somehting that workds for me a lot anyways, is once I get my posture, pushing down hard on their stomach to make it harder for them to sit up and break me back down. I dont know if that works for eveyrone though.
Once I get my posture and base frim then i start trying to use passed.
Im assuming your problem is getting posture ?

THe bit about putting elbows into thighs.....do you train at an actual school based in Sub grappling/BJJ? I ask because that is really a dead end guard break against anyone with more than a month in.
