Icon3 Ouchi-gari (Large Inner Reaping) drill

Okay, a drill for Ouchi-gari (Large Inner Reaping).

1. Have your partner sitting on the edge of a crash-mat.
2. Grab his lapels, your right leg forward
3. Pull him up into a semi-standing/crouching position puling UP with your elbows and at the same time:
4. Hook your right leg around his left leg - keeping your foot pointed to the ground and driving your hips through then:
5. Pull strongly down - pinning your elbows to his hips

- Keep your hips square - not side on (less chance of being countered)
- Head stays to the same side as the reaping leg (in this version)
- MUST have a strong downward action with your arms as soon as you have hooked the leg
- When pulling partner to a standing position, elbows pull up you are pulling like a power lift - using your legs/back/bodyweight to generate the power

Variation (as per the video)
Start with your left leg forward and take a left-hand on right-lapel grip only.
As you pull up, you switch legs with a little "skip" and your free (right) arm throws over the left shoulder of your partner, then down around his back - pinning his left arm to his side.

First bloke in the video (white gi) is our coach, Second clip (white suit, back to camera) is me.....

Video quality is not the best - but good enough for a phone-camera.

Good drill. I will see if I can find a good uke for this...

Speaking of drills. We worked on gripping drills for a while. That can get you tired very quickly...

I am interested in finding good kuzushi drills too.

-Just make sure you have a crash-mat. This is a VERY unforgiving throw on uke as his arms are trapped making it practically impossible to breakfall.

Purpose of doing it this way:

The arm action and strong pull is important in this throw. This drill focuses on building on that up/down pull to get uke onto/towards you with a strong lift, them slamming them down with a strong downward pull.

Also, uke's reaction to a strong forward pull is also to instinctively resist in the opposite direction, sitting back on the heels - perfect, thanks for helping with tori's ouchi....

It also helps in breaking past a defensive bent-over posture, or a "counter" to a messy attempt at any throw where they partially drop in front of you (say a kata-guruma attempt )...

I will check as I am not sure the crash pad we have is as forgiving as the one showed on the video.
