Q for the Judokas.

There is this Judo dojo I (35)am interested in attending with my son(14). I am only looking for something to add to my fitness routine and learn something new as well. My son who is a competitive wrestler wants to learn some new things.

What my question is do you see a lot of adults in your dojo or is it mostly younger kids? He wants to go but I think it is something he wants to do with me and I am all for that.

Basicly I dont want to go in there and be the only person besides the teacher over 16. I will be talking to the owner soon just want some real world feedback from you guys as to what I might expect.

It depends on the school. Of the two judo schools relatively close to me, one focuses more on kids, with only a few adult students, the other school has more adults/older kids. Go to the school and check it out, it's the only way to know.

Just go and watch - there are no kids in my Dojo... You actually need to be approved by the instructor if your under 16.

Hi clg34

It really all depends on the club some clubs at least here in Europe allow 14 and above judokas to spar with adults but only if there physically able to and other clubs have an adult only policy it really all depends on the club.

What you are thinking of doing is a great thing and your son will thank you in later life. Its the memories you have when your younger that you remember when your older. Most Dads in parents just don’t give a damn about there kids a child is like an accessory to some parents just like you have a new car or a new mobile phone allot of parents have kids. I would ask at the club and maybe even ask in explain about you and your son and how you would like to do and learn judo together and if it would be possible for you and your son to take part in adult classes.

I hope this helps and all the best.

I just talked to the coach and he said all ages are welcome and they have people of all age groups training together so I will have to check it out for myself I guess.

They have Judo Monday, wednesday, Friday, and wrestling on Tuesday, and Thursdays.

So that is about perfect for my son being a wrestler.

That’s great to hear! your son will love Judo and have an edge over most beginners. Judo and wrestling are very similar many of the takedowns are similar and the objectives are very similar also throws takedowns and pins are all counted. Its a great sport and its gives anyone who trains in judo confidence and well being you get a philosophy in Judo that most martial arts don’t have. Judo will help your sons wrestling and Vice versa. As a parent you will get so much rewards and happiness and confidence. You will also develop a particular fitness that is like no other a strength and cardio that only grappling arts have. Self defence wise Judo is on a par and superior to most that I have done and people I know who do judo have done and the satisfaction of throwing someone during sparing or competition and getting the take down the Ippon is like no other.

Its also one of the only sports out there that anyone absolutely anyone at any age can take part in and do well at. I know guys who started Judo when they were in there 40s and went to win international championships in the masters. I know guys in there 60s! who beat me and most young guys with ease and have better fitness than most men in there 20s! Its an amazing sport and you and your son are in for a great time. I hope the club is a good club and you get to experience and get the great things I have gotten from Judo.
