NAGA chicago

Well went to naga Chicago today and entered both gi white belt and no gi beginner. Now this is only my second competition and after only 7 months of BJJ I shouldn’t have my hopes to high but I have been training 6 days a week changed my diet really trying hard for this comp.

No gi match guy starts with a takedown I should sprawl but went with it and have him in closed guard passes to half guard I sweep him he scrambles and we are back on the feet. He shoots again I sink in a very tight guillotine pull guard and crank to hard and to fast he weathers it and my arms are done he passes to side control and then mount I regain guard he passes back to side control. Lost 8-2. Felt good about this match I had an opportunity to finish that I didn’t capitalize on but even with the loss still felt I can take some positives from it and also learn and work on some things.

Gi match starts up with a takedown and a scramble I end up on bottom closed guard. Down 0-2. He starts to pass I roll into turtle I end up getting back to my feet down 0-6. he takes me down but I reverse it end up in his open guard pass into side control 2-6 he gests back to full guard I start to pass he goes to turtle we sit there for a minute he rolls back to guard and sets up a collar choke that isn’t tight enough as time runs out he wins 2-7. now this match I am kind of confused on because when I was in turtle he didn’t have any hooks in but still got points and when he was in turtle I had one hook in and control for about 30 seconds but didn’t get any back points I just seems indicative of the uneven reffing going on at the event.

That would be my only complaint really it seems that some of the referees would score a match one way while another set would score it differently or even during the same match I would see one guy get a takedown 2 points then the other guy would get up get a takedown and lose 2-0. The rings seemed to move along pretty well and with only a few minor hiccups with people disappearing from their ring for as many competitors there were seemed to run smoothly. I had a really good time and training hard and looking forward to the next competition.

The reffing at the event was terrible. Also, with all that floor space it'd be nice if they had a few more rings, or perhaps had more than 1 match per weight class going at a time.

EVERYONE I HAVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!

When at a NAGA tournament.........

DO--------NOT-------LET------IT--------GO----------TO-----------POINTS

I myself was robbed and I at this very moment could pop in the video that shows the ref watching every match except the one at his feet........

REAL jiu-jitsu guys don't let it go to points nor do they want it to go to points, so if someone laid on top of you take comfort in that they suck ass.

This picture is straight off the NAGA website and I didn't get any points for a submission attempt... looks like a GOD DAMN SUB ATTEMPT TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still took 3rd place (in the begginers division with only 2 months experience, and someday myself and this fella will meet again and I guarentee he gets CTFO )

I got DQ'd...the rules really cater to sallies who score a takedown then lay on you for 5 minutes.

This is so true. If you get a takedown and land in side control (like most takedowns do), you get 4 freaking points. In my match thats what happened, I swept the guy, then he just closed his gaurd and held on for the final 2 minutes. I think I was the only person to finish the fight in my group. It seemed to me to be more of a wrestling competition as opposed to a submission wrestling one.

I wish they would have had more rings! I was waiting around for so long for the novice lightweight to begin. I had to go somewhere by 6:00 so I decided to go up a weight class just so I could at least get one fight in.

NAGA rules don't require hooks for back control, it's the ref's call whether or not to award control. I think that rule sucks, every other tournament I've seen requires both hooks.

I competed there as well, and totally agree about some of the reffing. One ref didn't give me any points for a near armlock held for about 20 seconds, but I won easily anyway. That aside, the refs for my matches were better than others I saw.

Man I loved shonie's hat. I definitely wasn’t trying to win on points and neither were my opponents but sometimes that’s how it ends up. I was just disappointed in how inconsistent the reffing seemed to be. the other guy no hooks in and received back points I have one hook in and I don’t receive points just seems random to me. Yea if you guys heard the announcement about next time they will deduct points for stalling that’s because of my teammate who got taken down and had the ref warn his opponent 3-4 times about stalling. I didn’t see to much of it myself but I definitely heard complaints about stallers.

The waits are horrible my first match was at about 1pm and I didn’t have my gi match until 6:15pm and when I left at 8 some of my teammates were still waiting to have their first match and they had been there since noon
