I have been robbed 2 times. I find it pretty fucking annoying that the population finds it normal to be robber. Like, everyone has been so its like not a big deal. Fuck that

my mate and i got robbed last night walking home from a bar haha. my mate was pretty drunk and i'd had a bit to drink and we were walking in a part of ipanema thats pretty safe in the day but apparently not that good at night because of the hotels in the area, proximity to favels and easy tourists targets (in this case us)

some dude came up asking for money and looked like a beggar so i was saying to him i didn't speak portuguese... in portuguese of course... and then he asked my friend and my friend said he didn't have nothing and was trying to back away until the guy pulled a knife and demanded "money money" really threateningly... so we threw all our money on the ground and he had to pick it up... my mate had R$4 and i had R$4 and prob 75c and once we threw that on the ground we just walked off and he left us as he picked up the cash... not a very experienced robber i guess because i had my bank card in pocket which he didnt check... we laughed the rest of the way back home after that... but thank god nothing bad happened. i actually felt a bit sorry for the guy my friend was saying how he didnt think that the guy was experienced and it was prob his first time and we were prob his first targets.

moral of the story is don't walk home wasted if your not 100% familiar with the area... don't carry much money.. and comply with their demands
Glad you made it out of that situation ok.

Remember that your card details can be stolen when taking cash out of an atm. Two friends had up to a R$1000 stolen in R$200 chunks over the space of a week. He didnt realise it was happening until his card wasn't working, phoned his bank and realised it had been cleared out.

The day I found out about my friend I called Lloyds Bank and checked the transactions for pretty much every day. I had used my card so much it was amazing I was never robbed. Were as my friend had only used has card a few times and it happened to him. I have been told that the City Bank atm in Ipanema is dodgy.

For KoF, Brians friend from New York and the Swedish girl were robbed along Ipanema beach on the way back from Leblon (I think it was club House or something like that). The guy that mugged him didn't take his bank cards either.
