Like others have mentioned, the pictures are a great addition. Very funny stories about people watching, i myself enjoy doing the same.

And just to offer my opinion on the debate with the guys a couple pages back, i dont think that would be legal for anyone but black/brown belts in an IBJJF tournament.

But i very well could be wrong. Its sparked my curiosity, so ill run it by my instructor tonight.

About the sub.... Yeah, it was either a toehold, which is illegal for purple belts, or a shin crush/ pain type submission.

Honestly, of course a purple can and should roll with those subs in training, but I always make sure the other person is in the know.

Meaning it is not cool to roll with full on toe holds and/or heelhooks, while the other guy thinks you 2 are playing the traditional game.

So I can kinda see where he would get pissed (on top of having his pride hurt of course), but the whole thing should blow over...

If it was a shin grind, I would get pissy as well (and have) as they too me have no place in a BJJ gym. You are there to get better and a line has to be drawn somewhere.. neckcranks, hands in the face and such pain subs might just be that line.

Again, if you wanna go there, make sure it is with a compliant partner.

I think a part of it is that is somewhat looked at as a cheap submission, something that might get the tap every now and then, but doesn't really show technical superiority over your opponent. Which is why we train no? To get better technically...

Rio definately. São Paulo is too big and has less BJJ clubs.

EYy hang around at Baixo Gavea, Gerbil. If you are posting a cultural blog, you shouldn't be so narrow minded and only staying at Barra going to Downtown Barra, that shit is not Brazil, =)

I understand what you're saying for sure and I'll make a trip down there. Maybe we can hang out sometime? Having someone I know to make sure that I dont get taken advantage of would be great.

Hey Ben dont freak out about the post length if you havent noticed most of the time it takes me two posts (this time 3) to get my blog on here so I dont mind reading the responses at all. I really like the feedback even when it's not something that I particularly want to hear.

As far as it being cheap or illegal...all those guys pretty much go for ankle locks on me, it's only fair game if they do it to me that I should do it to them and just so that we're all crystal clear the pressure was put on VERY slowely over at least...AT LEAST a 10 second period. LoL...I mean it was pretty comical with all the eye contact and slow pressure.
