Have you ever tried to swat a mosquito while urinating? It often leaves you wondering if urine is really sterile....one more thing that women don't really have to worry about.

This week has been very interesting with some ups and downs. I continued training and somehow I made it another week without any injuries. The week is about to start and I'm actually feeling pretty good so we'll see how class goes tonight.

Gordo and Neto returned from the States on Tuesday and I saw them both in the no gi class. I hate to say it but I dont think I had been to a no gi class in close to two weeks. Between the holidays, injuries and ringworm I just hadn't been able to make it, so I was really looking forward to getting some roll time where I didnt get crushed.

This particular class didnt seem as stacked with the world class blackbelts that previous classes have had but Neto was there so I wasn't disapointed. I've never had the chance to roll with him no gi and becuase he spent so much time in the kimono I figured that I would have an easier time with him once he took it off. After the warmups we divided into shark drill groups with 3 people. One person out, two people in with 5 minute rounds. I started in with Neto and he did 5 minutes in guard bottom with me trying to pass. Then after 5 minutes he as out and I went to guard and the fresh guy came in. I did pretty well up until this point and was happy to get a 5 minute break while Neto came in and did some guard passing. When it was my turn to come back in I was still feeling it from the rounds before.

I'm not sure if my performance was affected by lack of sleep, lack of hydration, or just do to the fact that Neto is a badass on the mat, but whatever the cause the next 5 minutes of my life led me to one of those very few moments where I consider quitting jiujitsu. People can point at this statement and say whatever you want...call me a loser or a quitter...but hey guys...it was possibly the worst 5 minutes in the last 2 or 3 years. We were wearing MMA gloves and I was getting punched in the face then when he got tired of doing that he would let me attempt a roll to my stomach and stop me on my side and pound on me some more there. From there he actually let me belly down and sent some more punches to the sides of my face.

I even got on the emotional roller coaster where I went form my cool as a cucumber self to slighly agitated, to angry (where I tried to muscle my way out of it), to hopeless. It was at this hopeless phase where Neto was on my back with both of us sitting on our butts and I had my arms up in the prisioner "I'm un-armed" position trying to deflect the blows coming to the sides of my head when I hear Gordo in his thick Portuguese accent "Deeeefeeeendddd Jeeeereeemyyy Deeeeefeeeenndd". I seriously wanted to voimit and was very thankful when the round was over and I scampered to the sidelines to lick my wounds.

I had really hoped to improve my game while Gordo was in the states and maybe "wow" him a little when he got back. Unfortuneatly that didnt work out and I'll probably spend the next couple of weeks trying to erase that image from his head. Why doesnt he instructor ever see the good things??? you know like tapping blackbelts or passing someones guard effortlessly? Grrr...mildly frustrating.

On the topic of tapping black belts. It appears that things between the other blackbelt and I have smoothed out. The day after our incident apparently he was getting some roll time with a really good brown belt who's around his same weight. Whereas his pride led to a confrontation between us his pride led him to unconscienceness with this brown belt. The whole thing just kills me...I mean pride is good but two instances in two days I guss is a little over the top.

As there was a lot of speculation over the move I grabbed Dennis this morning after class and taped this move so that you guys can see it. As you can notice we do it in one of the living rooms in the house so the sound is a little crazy and I'm just out of bed. Watch the video and let me know what you think. Some of you arent going to see a problem with it, others of you are going to understand why he spazed a little.

Some people have expressed some interest in knowing how the classes are run at Gordo's so that they can get a better idea of how the training is. The tyipcal class tyipcally starts 15 minutes late, which is equivilant to on time for Brazil. By saying 15 minutes late what I mean is that most of the Gringos that are going to be attending the class are already there warming up while the locals and blackbelts meander in anytime in the first half an hour. The warm up is typical of most BJJ schools that it includes some stretches, jogging, rolls, breakfalls, shrimping drills (or scooting), jumping jacks, push ups...you know the normal stuff.

When I trained at Alliance in Charlotte sometimes the warmups were brutal and would leave you worn out by the time you got to the actual training. I am glad to report that never happens at this school. Even if you are only mildly in shape the warm ups are designed for exactly what the title says...a warm up. Rommel does a great job in this sense...perhaps better than any other instructor that I've ever seen. It is kind of odd that it doesnt really matter who you are by the end of the warm up you have a slight sweat going but you're not really tired at all...it's kind of nice.

From there sometimes we move onto a technique. Lately we've learned some good techniques that I've never seen before and that is a nice change from the way it was for the first month or so. We do each technique a few times and then people sit around the outside of the class. It's an odd feeling because I'm used to repping the heck out of a move and it appears that in general people dont like to do a lot of reps here. I feel odd when my partner decides he's got it and sits off to the side. So you're faced with either sitting there in the open like an ass, begging your partner for more reps, or joining him on the side. Tyipcally I beg for a few extra reps but then the blackbelt loses interest and moves to the side.

The real "meat and potatos" of every class is the roll time. Sometimes we dont even do technique we move stright to grappling. Tyipcally you are still feeling fresh and everyone is looking forward to rolling like you look forward to christmass morning. Everyone starts with a clean slate and everyone hopes to get that gift wrapped present/submission/sweep that you've been thinking about all day. Sometimes it's Christmass...sometimes its Brisk...sometimes Holloweeen.

The weather here has made a turn for the worst and all of my kimonos got caught out i the rain. So sadly Friday, even though I wanted to train, I could not. I went and watched the class so that maybe I could see some new transitions or maybe catch a technique or two. When I walked in the door Gordo was standing there and asked me why I wasnt training. When I told him why he didnt seem suprised, apparently this is not an uncommon problem in Brazil and he told me that he would have brought me a uniform if he had known. He asked me if I was going to train in the morning and then offered to bring one then.

I havent had a whole lot of interaction with Gordo but I must say that he is a really easy man to get along with. He is at times happy but never jubilant. He is at times upset, yet never yells. I have described him as "stoic" to other people, but the more time I spend with him I believe a more accurate description would be "well balanced". It is due to this fact that Gordo is very easy to respect. In the States there are many BJJ instructors that blur the line between friend and teacher and it can lead to a lot of problems. This is not a problem that people experience at Gordo's school and the best part is he doesnt enforce this line, it's just there. Gordo has all the characteristics of a great leader, justice, judgement, dependability, decisiveness, tact, integrity and knowlege to name few. It is an honor to train with him and for me the type of person that you want to be associated with.

The next morning Gordo was true to his word and he actually brought me a kimono to train in. I'm a rather large guy (6'3 200lbs), so it was kind of funny to put on Gordos gi bottom. I looked like I was waiting for a flood. The top fit well and it was good to be able to train when otherwise I would have been watching again. I was half heartedly hoping that the kimono would have some sorty of super powers associated with it, but unfortuneatly I got tooled that morning. Hopefully none of my infamous powers rubbed off on it. I did however half heartedly think about having a Gerbil patch put on the back of it before I give it back to him as a joke, but I'm pretty sure I'd be the only person that thought it was funny. So ultimately I decided against it.

I've really tried to start taking more pictures. I enjoy taking a lot when I'm at home, and I took a lot of pictures in Iraq but for some reason the first couple of months here I've kind of slacked off. I'm not sure if it's due to the fact that I'm afraid to take my camera out in public or if I dont want to look like that "gringo" taking a picture. It was much easier in Iraq becuase I had a rifle and I was wearing a uniform...I already stuck out like a sore thumb. But in any event there will be more pictures posted. The first random picture that I would like to post is one of Gisele. Most people are always receptive of the pictures I post so tell me what you think of this one.

Gisele and I went to a birtday party on Saturday and it was a new experience. I've never quite been to a party like this before. They described it as a "Spanish" birthday party and a lot of people were in costume (including Gisele). Some of the guests had been assigned parts to play and throughout the party they would dim the lights and little skits were performed on stage. Then inbetween skits people were drinking, eating and chatting away. It was a pretty good time and I took some pictures of this experience also.

These were mostly the people that were in costume and you can see that the range of dress was quite weird. That added to the fact that I dont understand the language at all led to me laughing at some times when other people weren't. Thankfully no one held it against me and I had a great time.

There were some conversations between the ladies that I REALLY wanted to listen to. I felt like the deaf child that everyone talks about in his presence. It's kind of frustrating becuase I can hear the words "sexo oral" and "Manage twa" but I cant understand what they are saying. It got even worse when they one woman would say something, lean in, and then they would all look at me and laugh....damnit! Some day I'll speak Portuguese and I'm not going to tell them I'm fluent. Then I'm going to sit there and enjoy the conversations with a blank look on my face...some day...some day it will all play in my advantage MUHAHHAHAHAHAH....

Sunday I went to the movies alone. Not that I particularly like going alone but there as no one else to go with. As I got to the movies I realized that there was some sort of block party going on and there were people everywhere. I went and bought my ticket (for Transformers) and then went back outside to people watch. As I walked around and enjoyed the scenerey I got an Acai`. It was at this point that I noticed all the people watching a football/soccer game. I then noticed that the game was the US vs Brazil and oddly enough I took more interest in the game. As the US started to do better and the Brazilian crowed was getting more frustrated I was happy to get up and leave for my movie before they started looking for an actual American to take out their frustration on.

The movie went well and I had a good time even though I was alone. After the movie was over I decided to walk around the "block party" more and everyone was having a really good time. Brazilians in general really know how to have a good time. People all over the place with their children and almost everyone had a smile on their face. It was so nice that it was contagious and my mood improved even more. It was at this point that I passed a Burger King...that's right another resturante from back home. I had already had some Brazilian food earlier in the day so I thought I would give it a shot.

As I got closer I noticed that this was a very different BK...everything was extremely nice. The front windows were well done, the attandants were nice, and all the booths were nice. As I passed the front window I looked inside and I noticed that everyone was wearing those shitty little BK paper crowns. I was shocked and amused all at the same time and I tried to take a picture. People saw me there standing with my camera and I got embarassed so I decided to go inside. As I got in line I was handed a private little menu that had all the prices and combos on it. Then when I was waiting in line a Burger King representative approached me and took my order via palmpilot....as I stood in line. Apparently the lines are just to pay. It really streamlined the buying food experience and it made me wonder if we'll be doing this in the states.

After I got my food and proceeded to the dining room I picked out a table and had a seat. There was a fresh paper crown on my table and I put it on (you know I want to fit in) then I proceeded to have a great time eating alone while taking picturs of myself wearing this paper crown. Oddly enough it made me happy...so weird. In the dinining area there are hostesses walking around...I would say no less than 5 women that make sure you have everything you could want.

The food there was freaking awesome too...it tasted JUST like the food back home which is kind of nice. It's not better...it's not worse...its just like home, pickles and all! The overall dinning experience is one that was so good that I will have to go back again...this time I'm going to have to take some friends...Dennis...maybe Gisele Thiago or someone it will be a great time. Maybe it's the cheap cost of labor here, or the lack of availiabilty of jobs, but I wish we could give 1/10th of the motivation these employees have here to the BK employees home. Here are some pics of the crown/store

I have gotten much more confident in riding the bus and I've started to do it more regularly. When I say "more confident" I am speaking in terms of being able to pick out the right bus and actually arrive at the desired destination...I want to make it painfully clear that I am in no way speaking about the safety of the driving. Any how, this fact results in the area I can explore being significantly increased. It however also leads to some bad experiences with asshole buss drivers.

The first experience was from Saturday night when I was trying to come home from the party. It was raining extremely hard and we were in a part of town that isnt known for it's safety. As we sat there in the dark...in the pouring rain waiting for the bus we quietly counted each bus as it passed by wondering when our bus was going to come. We had waited about 45 minutes when our bus finally approachd. It was still raining hard with thunder and lightning when the bus came. As we stood up, 3 of us in total, and raised our hands the bus driver looked at us and kept on going. To say that I was irritable would be an understatement so I did what every American does...I cussed...rather loudly at no one in particular to let out my frustration. Then we caught a shuttle van for more than twice the price and made the voyage home.

In addition to this guy ignoring us on the side of the road we had another bus driver refuse to let a large group of us on the bus using the front door. He made us all go on in the back while the man who takes the money pretneded to be asleep. Then he required us all to pay him the same amount of money we would have paid if we had gone through the turnstile. It was clearly a scam to make him some money and it was kind of comical when we all got off the bus and the guy who collects the money jumped right up and was fully awake....they really need some better regulation on heir buses. I've had some super good experiences, some pretty funny experiences and some downright shitty ones. I guess that's with life though. The more you experience the more chance you're going to have some shitty experiences.

I will end this post on that note...experiencing life. It's a blast even when it's shitty. I'm still entertaining ideas for tattoos...the "nao falo Portuese" one has some merit and it's something like I would get, only problem is people wouldnt get it when I actually start speaking Portuguese which is my hope, so let's keep those ideas coming please.

I hope you guys like the new format, and I hope that the movie and the pictures actually post in the blog, that would make my life much easier. Keep the comments coming guys and ify ou have any questions, as always, feel free to ask.

The Gerbil

Great pics Gerbil!

Dennis and Gerbil, a bit off topic, but do either of you guys know Buck Something? from this thread: I am moving to rio de janeiro in 18 days.

He disappeard nearly a month ago after he had been updating his log pretty much every week.

I think he trains at De La Rivas in Copa but am not sure.

Just wanted to make sure he is OK. I PMd him but no response.

I do not know him other than having him post in the thread once or twice. Dennis knows him and has met him once or twice I think but does not see him regularly.

Excellent post once again Gerbil! Truly enjoyable and the pics/movie add a lot! I can see now how that submission you were talking about would spaz someone out. That's gotta hurt and its got that element of "WTF just happened??!".

You're right too, that's quite possibly the nicest BK I've seen ever.
