Thanks jscore! Any idea how much privates with him, or one of his assistants, runs?

Could you give us some insight into how he runs class and teaches? I.E. do you guys do a lot of drilling or is it more like Gordos with less drilling and a lot of sparring?

Thanks man.

Codysweat, I think you were asking about Piratas de Ipanema. Its an awesome place to meet people and find out where the best parties and events are going on. Brian (the owner) always seems to have his fingers on the pulse of the party life in Brazil. Its also dirt cheap to stay there. I would definitely recommend staying there for at least a week or 2 when you first get to Brazil.

I can imagine it wouldn't be such a nice place to stay during the Brazilian summer ie January, Feb because the ventilation isn't that good and it would be incredibly humid.
Thanks Ozy. Brian seems like a super nice guy. Ive emailed him before just to ask him a few questions and he was always helpful. I love reading their blog also.

i agree totally agree with the things ozy said about Piratas... you meet alot of great people there, that's why i've been going back to Ipanema the past couple days just to catch up with the friends i made there (and get a session or two at Fight Zone before my month there expires) even though it's a 30min bus ride each way

i have to admit the place looks a bit run down and dirty... but it feels like home in no time... i was paying about R$90 a week (you get the 7th day free) when i was there... and i think some hostels in the area charge about R$30 a night... you also get free internet, if you can get on one of the comps

i'll have alot of good memories of piratas and the people i've met while there... brian's a really nice guy and does his best to encourage people to get out of the hostel and experience rio for all it has to offer

No idea about privates.

Light warmup
He teaches few positions, which we then drill for 10-15 mins or so.
Then straight up rolling for about 45-60 mins.

No drills, etc.

To be honest it wasn't the fact that it was dirty and run down that bothered me. It was his bloody thieving assistants. They would steal guests food at night. It didn't effect me too much because I couldn't cook to save my life but it did cause friction with other guests. The Brazilian assistants were cool, I think it was the Argentinian and Peruvian ones that were stealing the food but none of the guests could prove it.

Those negatives considered, it was still awesome to stay at and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. You should probably do what KoF did, ie try a number of places. I planned to visit De La Rivas and was excited to train at Gordos. I loved Ipanema so much that I didn't end up going to Gordos and was too lazy to walk to De La Rivas place.

Thanks jscore. How would you rate the instruction overall? Would DLR come around and help you and others out while you were rolling, drilling etc?

I think the worst thing about Rio is going to be the quality of instruction, your head could explode trying to decide where you want to train lol.

He's an awesome instructor.

He typically doesn't walk around the mat when people are rolling, but the environment of the school is that other higher belts will show you what the mistake is, etc. Nobody has any egos, etc.

I'm extremely happy training with him.

man a bag or two of my food went missing while i was in the hostel too, but i dont think it was any of the staff at the time... if anything my friends, who's been here 2 months and is friends with the staff, said they'd just use a bit of peoples sauce or small things but not down right take whole bags of stuff which is still happening even though those guys have left

i wanted to go check out DLR too, but man its a walk and a half from ipanema! but i'm still here for 5 months so should be able to make my way out one day ... how long you in rio for jscore? u got a phone # here?

i dont think quality of instruction will be a hard thing to find... i'm learning new things every session i go and people are MORE than happy to show you things if you only ask, even if they dont speak english they will still be able to show you

having trained at both fight zone and gordos i think instruction would be quite similar in most gyms in brasil
-warm ups
-position/technique drills for 15-20min
-rolling for the rest of the class... prob a bit of drilling from a certain position, then maybe points rolling, then normal rolling to finish off

I'm in Ipanema also (near Leblon), where you at?

Stop by DLR's just to see the difference between him and Fight Zone.
