Motivation/training Partner/addiction Questions
I recently been real busy with work and other stuff and have not been able to attend class...plus the fact I injured my ankle.
I roll with my cousin when I get time at the house and I am starting to get real unmotivated. He talks a lot of crap but I keep tapping him. Anyhow after a process of this over a month, I lost all motivation. I am a total beginner and I need something to get that fire back in me.
I also smoke weed everyday. I mean every everyday. For the past 4-5 years Id say.
Now, I dont know if its the constant weed smoking that makes me feel unmotivated or the constant sessions with the same person everyday.
any1 have any similiar experiences? If so, what did you find helped out?
And if any1 else on here had a herbal addiction, how did u get off of it!! I try and try and try and everyday I say to myself "no more smoking...have to stay focused"...and what do I do right after work

I don't smoke before i have something important to do, but yeah, I smoke.
Does it effect me? Not really. I've got stoned before rolling and all it did was make me much calmer while I rolled. (and gave me cotton mouth)
I think that rolling with the same guy that you can tap left and right all the time is your problem. When I smoke I get more interested if anything, because I analyze every little detail of the techniques.
I'm not suggesting that you smoke or that you shouldn't, though. That's up to you, I'm just sharing my experience.

As a long time smoker, I say from experience that in most cases, pot doesn't directly make you lose motivation. If you are already the type of person that lacks REAL drive and you have a problem with procrastination, pot will keep your ass on the couch with a video game controller or the tv remote in your hands. It's not that the pot is making you unmotivated to train, it's just that once you toke up YOU DECIDE that you want to relax and enjoy being stoned instead of getting up and training your ass off.
I wanted to see what Eddie was fussing about so I smoked before class once, and I don't care for it. I have no strength, I'm slower, and worse of all I'm "stuck in my own head" thinking while I should be listening to my instructor showing technique. I still love the sweet leaf, I have to smoke after work, and when I come home after class it's nice to hit a bowl, relax, and think about the session I just had.
It can certainly hinder you if you let yourself get in the habit of skipping class or getting up and doing some stuff yourself. But as long as you smoke like a dime or less everyday, get a good aerobic workout a couple times a week and keep training your jits you'll be fine. It's all about how much you want it. Heart > any drug.
The monotonous training sessions are probably your problem. Teach your cousin as much as you can if you can't find other training partners. Hell, teach him as much as you can even if you can find others. Show him how to beat you. What he's doing wrong and how you're catching him, and how to prevent that. Teach him how to beat you and you will be forced to get better. You're bored because you aren't learning or GOING anywhere with your jiujitsu.
But I'm a >3 month white belt, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

i'd say your problem is with rolling with the same guy over and over. I've done this before and found it to get pretty boring

I find my experience similar to Yojimbo. I can't smoke and roll. It just doesn't work well for me. However, when I do smoke (maybe once every two or three weeks, I'm not an avid smoker), I absolutely love watching fights, especially no gi. I spent almost 4 hours last week watching videos from the 2003 ADCC and studying some of the techniques. I rewound a few Marcelo armdrags over 10 times and just studied the tech. That's the extent of what marijuana has to do with my jiu jitsu.

Absolutely agreed. I used to smoke every day in high school and early college and it did nothing to impact my productivity.

Keep the weed, stay on the couch, go on welfare, marry your cousin then blame it on the govenment. If all else fails I am sure there is an empty van down by a river near your trailer.
