long term advice and building a routine for bjj
ok guys
long post
i competed at seni at the beginning of the month (when i say competed i mean i missed my fight on the saturday but had a fight on the sunday)
this was my second bjj.
ive been training for about 8-9 months and im a 3 stripe white belt.
im 27 and have no real previous experience. i did jkd for a year before bjj and we did some combat submission wrestling, but from that all i picked up was the very basics of positioning and some submissions.
before martial arts i spent a good few years doing weights, rugby, powerlifting and strongman stuff. got a 500lb plus deadlift and squat to my name.
well anyway
the point of this post is i need some advice from more experienced guys on long term training goals and constructing my training.
after seni ive taken a few weeks off because i have some end of yera exams but come beginning of june im straight back at training.
ok
a few questions
1) including weight training with bjj.
my academy has moved to a new gym which has alot of free weights, im keen to get my full strength back again. how is doing weights before my bjj class? my class runs from 8-10pm so i cant think of another time to fit it in and morning time is out of the question with work.
i wouldnt be doing a ***got bodybuilding workout but would be going back to a strongman style workout as in lots of core work, grip work, strength endurance explosive speed.
would this be ok?
also im interested in what sort of extra training wrestlers do any help on that would be really appreciated.
2)yoga with bjj
my bjj classes are monday, tuesday, thursday and saturday mornings.
there is a local yoga class just started on a monday night and was considering going to it as a way to break up my training and to really work on my breathing and flexibility.
has anyone had any experience with yoga added to there training. also would it just be better to just do bjj 4 times a week and forget about yoga?
3) other grappling arts added to bjj
should i just concentrate on bjj for now before i try anything else? would i just complicate things and be mediocre at everything rather than good at one thing? i read one piece of advice on this forum that said you should wait to become a purple belt before ven thinking about doing other grappling arts.
i found a wrestling club on a friday night not to far from but i have to admit i got kinda pissed off because all i had was the instructor bad mouth bjj and moan when i kept pulling guard in my first lesson.
40 cardio with bjj
i know the advice with grappling is if you want to be good at grappling you should grapple. so is the best form of cardio for grappling just lots of rolling? or would cycling or swimming be an option.
thanks for any advice you can give me guys.
just trying to pick your brains for any advice you have.

I don't really have advice, but am just amazed you aren't constantly injured with that intense of a training routine.

Do you really need all that?
If you wanna improve BJJ, then train BJJ dont overtrain and tire yourself out. As for the cardio, grappling is a different type of cardio then running so if you want good cardio for grappling get alot of mat time and roll.

I like the idea of yoga. It will rejuvinate your body while helping your lung capacity, muscular endurance and flexibility. You could do yoga almost every day in my opinion. I would work on calistenics too. I would limit your weight training to once or twice a week. As you know strength is good to have, but it takes a back seat to technique and conditioning.
As far as the wrestling goes. I think its good to cross train with wrestlers and judo guys. Theres nothing worse than a high ranking bjj guy who cant take anyone down. I dont think your wrestling coach is the problem. Why the hell would you pull guard at a wrestling lesson? Thats like the worst thing you can do in wrestling. Of course that would frusterate your instructor. Try to get the most out of those training sessions, dont pull guard. Fight not to get taken down.
good luck

Why the hell would you pull guard in wrestling class? I had a response planned.. but when I read that I just can't wrap my mind around any other thought. If you pull guard in a WRESTLING class what do you think the instructor is going to think?
I imagine if I went to a boxing class clinched and started unloading knees/elbows I'd probably get bitched at also.

i was at the wrestling class for the first time and we was on the floor after about half an hour and he explained that if your shoulders touch the mat you lose.
we started rolling and twice when we rolled my shoulders touched the mat and he started going of on one about bjj.
i didnt explain myslef clearly, what i meant was from my first wrestling class the teacher was a prick about the fact i struggled to go to my front rather than my back.
its not like we was grappling and i puilled guard and tried a triangle on him.
