Loyalty to schools

I know this topic is has been handled before, but my case is rather unique. I train at a small school max 10 guys. The instructor is a purple belt, who's also been to Brasil to train, fought in the worlds etc. He is a great instructor. My problem is the quality of guys I roll with. They are all mostly new to the sport, and I tool them every class. In fact, it's become quite boring. I want to roll with guys that are better than me, so that I can be forced to work harder and improve.

Here's the loyalty part. I still like the way the instructor teaches and feel I can still learn a lot from him, but he might be offended if I roll somewhere else. I'm trying to get the best for myself (obviously) and don't want anyone to harbour bad feelings. Could it be possible to get the best of both world, or would I be forced to switch schools? Anyone here been in a school where they demand you roll only in that school or leave?

If he is as great of an instructor as you say he is, he would be happy that you want to expand and better yourself.

A good instructor would recognize that you aren't being challenged in your situation and want you to go seek out some better training partners.

I think there may also be pressure from his affiliation to keep students. This could be another factor I didn't count on.

I would say that you need to be honest with him about what you're thinking.

Either way, if you end up going somewhere else and he finds out from someone else, that would be worse.

My advice would be to talk with him. Let him know how you're feeling. Work from there.

El madre debe querer lo mejor para sus hijos. Talk to your instructor, see what he says and then go from there.
