'Kosen' newaza specialist at Kodokan (crosspost f/ JudoForum)

Crossposted from Cichorei Kano @ JudoForum:

Well marketed by DVD companies, the past years [the Kodokan] had many newbies with their mouth full about kosen judo. We have tried to explain that this is mere Kodokan newaza but refers to a specific area when judo competition between Japanese Polytechnical schools was flourishing, competitions which followed rules different from today's rules hence favoring exquisite and extensive newaza.

There are very few judo sensei still alive today who were active an participated in the Kosen era, and who specialized in newaza hence becoming through newaza wizards. Below, you find a rare clip featuring Matsumura-sensei, 8th dan Kodokan. Matsumura is a retired sensei in his 80s who still shows up in the evening at Kodokan sharing his newaza wizardry with a handful of enthusiast followers. His hands and feet are more like claws than hands of feet and his flexibility and efficacy in newaza are mindblowing. These sensei were the predecessors of later newaza greats like Kashiwazaki-sensei.

I have to say that I wouldn't call those techniques "wizardry." They are very basic and straightforward.

That being said, it was interesting to watch the videos. The sensei seemed to have a much more direct and immediately aggressive style than is typically found in BJJ. His style definitely had more of a Judo feel to it.

It's nice to see some clips from old teachers to understand the history of these techniques a little better.
