If they're real big on the "Kodokan" part, expect them to show you a lot of crappy throws that don't really work that well.

The classical forms of the throws shown in the official Kodokan judo books rarely work in actual sparring without some modification.

Some judo schools are cool about modification for actual use and will show lots of very useful variations on throws. Other schools are very traditional and will get mad at you for doing stuff that isn't "in the book."

Oh, and I'm assuming you mean you are training at a place in America that says it teaches the Kodokan way. Usually judo people in America who talk about the Kodokan a lot are fat old black belts who like talking about judo more than they like actually training judo.

Maybe I'm biased though.

You will learn "the way". Seriously. It's not the techniques but the principles...

aaaaaaaaaah kodokan the great myth of judo. do a search oh doughbelly and kodokan/kosen and you will find out all theinformation you need on it. He, unlike most/ if not all of the 'judo' posters knows about 'high lvl' international judo and kodokan/kosen judo.

Don't work cause u don't have timing to pull it off.
It's like say that "Sweeps from the guard" don't work the way are showed.

To pull it off on resisting opponent you need skills. then if you haven't you have to use strenght and unorthodox move.

Unorthodox throws are usefull sometimes, but give bad abits.

Koga make Suwari seoi work pretty well
