Kani-Basami

What are the real reasons this throw is illegal? like what has happened?

I know "it's dangerous", but what are some of the possible "dangers" of this take-down?

honestly I use it all the time messing around in the academy and I can't really see why it should be illegal...

It's slightly dangerous to the knee, which is the official reason it is illegal.

Most people think the real reason is a political one. I guess a few years back a famous Japanese competitor was hurt badly by the throw, so they banned it as a reaction.

Personally I think it's just fine to use as long as you're not deliberately attacking the knee. I know it's possible to do it in that manner, but to be honest you can do a lot of legal judo throws in a "whoops" illegal manner (throwing on the head, attacking the knee, throwing with a joint lock, etc.)

If poorly used, it can cause injury to the knee.

I guess the same could be said for any throw, except this one had more cases of misuse than most.

I've also heard it was used to DELIBERATELY hurt opponents in a few comps.

A new kani-basami thread pops monthly these days it seems. Anyway, kani basami was used to deliberately injure people especially in Japan. Before the technique was banned many high-schools/colleges in Japan sent some of their players to practise with other schools' best players (people who were considered a threat to their best players in competition) before big competitions in order to cripple them. This kept happening over and over again, a pattern was noticed by the officials and kani-basami was banned.

Kani-basami requires little to no technique and is dangerous to the knees, nothing is lost with it being banned judo.

Is it? Didn't know that...I know it's legal in submission grappling (at least in the advanced division)...It's a great way to set up some flying heel hooks and flying kneebars.

Yeah, it's illegal in BJJ, and I think that's stupid....
