Judo Newaza Evolution

If you open the usual Judo book, you end up with the same 29 newaza technique of the old days. However when you watch higlights of high level competition you can see interesting variation and new ideas being applied.

So my question is, what are the most important addition to judo newaza in the last 50 years?

50 years are A LOT.
old book of newaza like Okano's are from 30 year ago, and have a lot of different setup compared to old book, like kawaishi one.
And if you take kashiwazaki book you see even more technique than okano's one, but most of time are "unique" variation of old technique.

It's hard to have a reference of what you have to consider the "newaza" before WW2, so I use as a reference the Kosen JUDO videotape.

From that newaza, the most important addition to me are :

- New setup for Jujigatame Turn to attack the turtle

- Okuri Eri jime grabbing the leg (Instead of the doing normal okuri eri or the koshi jime. In Bjj you call it all clock choke)

- Tobi jujigatame (flyingi armbar) or Tomoe nage to jujigatame

- Sode Guruma Jime variation
(Back in the day It was used only from halfguard or inside the guard Like Brazilian Olympian Ezequiel Paraguassu did in 1989 when he tapped with that technique the guys at gracie barra. But now you can see used from back, side, to sweep and much more)

Yes, you are right 50 years are a lot, maybe too much. I choosed that timeframe because of olympic games (1964), to understand how much olympic judo added in terms of techniques to traditional newaza.

In your opinion what are the best books/vids on the subject?
(I already have Vismara's book)

Okano Vital Judo - Newaza is very good and competition oriented (and is in italian).

Show only competition setup and not the technique itself, and show also one of the "most" important part for Newaza in judo that is the Entry in Newaza (Al the way to enter in newaza that aren't throw to score point ).

The BOOK I'd LOVE to have is Newaza de Katsu Judo, by Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki.

IT's a series that include 1 Book and a set of 2 VHS in Japanese.
I've watch some clip of the VHS and are VERY good, full of details and easy to understand even if is all in japanese (the way he show technique is similar to Garcia's instructional if you have seen it).

Then there are the 3 master class book, Shimewaza - Osaekomi and Armlock (first 2 of Kashiwazaki, 3rd of Adams).
I'vent seen this, but i'm planning to buy them soon.

I armlock of neil adams you can see a lot of innovation that came in judo when samboka start to train and fight in judo. A lot of the progression in armlocks came from Russian, cause Japanese were more Chokes oriented.

Other than this, i've seen a French Book that is called "succesfull technique on the ground" and it's Good.

About Video Series :

- Mike swain's newaza series is good, but very Competition Judo Oriented (but maybe it's the thing your looking for).

- Koji Komuro - Komlock : I love this instructional cause Komuro show the technique that is my teacher's tokui waza/special (the setup Komuro call komlock in the video) and Sode Guruma jime, one of my favourite strangle.

Here is a move I have rarely seen in a judo book but is pulled off very well. It's an omaplata turnover into a holddown. So much for judo guys not knowing groundwork.

BJJ has probably had the most impact on the evolution of Judo's newaza in recent times.

Not really, Not for the moment at high level.
But next 10-15 years probably will be true, just when more guy like Canto or Ferguson will start to compete in judo.
At the moment newaza specialist are still pure judoka, But with more guy that train also bjj the most usefull setup for judo will take and use.

The best thing that MMA and bjj can have in judo is make more "new" judoka attract to newaza (a lot of guy don't like it and don't train it properly) so there will be a come back of judo to the 80's with more time for ground game and active atlethes.

Judo has been getting better Ne-waza because they get a chance to watch bjj guys... and say "Wow thats cool, i could do my favorite throw into that position" IE. Aoki throwing people with uchi-mata into a Darce/Brabo choke.

Bjj made Ne -Waza cool again.

Bjj's are the bell bottoms... WERE BRINING EM BACK

It doesn't have to be like Gsoares2 said, the top newaza guy in Sweden got the that point by doing tons of newaza becasue his sensei had shitty knees and wanted to focus on something that was easier on his body. I rolled with him at a camp and he did stuff that reminded me about all sorts a crazy guards I see posted here
