JKD Grappling

Hi All,

Just wondered if any of you have experience with JKD Grappling. I was looking at doing something additional to BJJ and obviously narrowed it down to the standard other grappling arts such as wrestling or judo. I found one place which does JKD Grappling which they call "shooto grappling/ wrestling".

I'll obviously head down there and check it out, but just wondering if anyone has any background with this sort of thing. The most obvious fighter I could think of with this style is Eric Paulson, which if it's the same stuff he does would be great.

Thanks for any opinions.

Joe

I have Bruce Lee's book, the Tao of Jeet Kune Do, I think it's called (in a drawer somewhere). Bruce Lee developed Jeet Kune Do from a mixture of different arts, combining the techniques he thought were useful. In his book there is a section on grappling in which he has diagrams taken from jiu jitsu techniques, so if you're going to a jeet kune do school looking for grappling techniques you're probably going to see a lot of what you're already getting.

I think Judo is a good addition to BJJ. BJJ schools don't seem to focus much on the take down aspect of grappling. Devloping your take down game could help you to secure the dominant faster in competition.

Most JKD instructors have taken to bringing in BJJers, I know that is what Burton Richardson has done. As for Erik Paulson, honestly, I have never been that impressed. When you look at the submissions that usually win in MMA events you get a very small list. As for Bruce Lee's section on grappling in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do, that was based on limited experience with Gene LeBell years ago. If you are going to supplement your BJJ I would recommend a basic wrestling class, perhaps something taught by a high school wrestling coach or look for a Sambo class.

All of the best JKD instructors are brining in experienced guys from BJJ, judo, wrestling, etc. to teach grappling. JKD in itself has no real grappling since it is a philosophy of training, not a cirriculum in itself, regardless of whatever Bruce Lee drew in his book or the efforts to copy them.

JKD is a philosophy, not an art, though Dan Inosanto teaches JKD Concepts, which is the philosophy in practice. They use various grappling arts (various forms of wrestling, non-sport judo, bjj, jjj, catch wrestling, probably sambo too), but it's adapted to the user's strengths nd weaknesses.

Doesn't Dan Inosanto train with the Machados?
Also I thought that Larry Hartsell was into the grappling in a big way?

Its probably combat submission wrestling. You could do a lot worse than giving it a shot.

JKD places usually teach good stuff. They are very open minded.

I completely agree. My first self-defense training was a JKD place, and I learned a lot of stuff that gave me a good foundation when BJJ schools finally started opening up here.
Also, the stuff that mma classes don't teach, you will learn at a JKD school (like practicing head butting an opponent, or having them wear a helmet and practicing eye jabs or practicing groin shots full-force with an opponent that has tons of padding on). MMA is great for self-defense but teaching yourself these moves so that they come naturally in a self-defense situation is priceless in my opinion.
