Jake Shield's Grappling/Fighting Style (spoiler)

Jake Shield’s Fighting/Grappling Style

I know I shouldn’t listen to the haters, but I do get annoyed at people who don’t appreciate Jake’s style of fighting. He is not a lay and pray fighter. He is constantly looking to improve his position and go for the finish.

Lay and pray means to stay in someone’s guard and hope you don’t get subbed. I am not a big fan of that style. But, Jake does not do this. He is always trying to pass guard and get the mount. He’s on a 13 fight win streak with 8 of those wins by submission.

I was watching the fight in a Berkeley bar with our team so I couldn’t hear the booing. I’m glad for that. Mayhem is an excellent grappler. His defense was amazing last night. I really enjoyed the fight because I am a grappler as well. At a very basic level I understood what was happening. I thought it was a great fight and I was entertained. Jake’s positional dominance was fun to watch.

I hope the mods don’t mind that I put this here. I think my fellow Sherdog grapplers can at least appreciate a world class grappler making a living fighting in a cage.

Agreed. People accuse Jake of just remaining in dominant position the whole fight while failing to consider Mayhem was amazing in defending submissions throughout, from a grappling perspective, I thought it was a great fight.

You think these people know what position is or what the guard is? Let alone passing it and what type of skill it takes to do so (in order to appreciate that of Jake Shields')?

I was puzzled by the boos since that fight was actually entertaining but that's really how things are

I thought it was a great fight, totally agree with the OP.

Miller is frustrating to watch though, he needs to execute better gameplans as he's a great fighter!

As a grappling match you found that interesting? Can't say I agree. There was one serious sub attempt (Mayhem's RNC), a lot of handfighting, and zero damage infliction. A few interesting scrambles. A ton of staying in the same position for a very long time.

As a grappling match it was boring, and as an MMA event it was worse.

There will be much more exciting grappling on display today at the Nogi event.

When Miller got much closer to ending the fight by submission than Shields, something's wrong. He's not pushing for the sub hard enough. Also, his takedowns were dull. Miller at least used a variety. Shields kept methodically doing the same thing. Dominant? Yeah, I guess, but really boring.

GSP would eviscerate either guy at this point.

it was horrible.

he has no gnp.

he never once tried a triangle or an armbar.

In MMA one should use GNP to soften up his opponent so that submissions can start presenting themselves. For a grappling match it would've been ok but for a fight it was painful to watch. I hope they pair him up against Henderson next time he is on CBS.

Z,

Dull takedowns? I can appreciate any effective takedown. Also, Jake was never satisfied with just a takedown. He was always looking to pass guard. As far as sub attempts, Jacare couldn't sub Miller either. Plus, Jake should really be fighting at 170. The size difference was obvious. Jake walks around a 185.

As far as no gi worlds goes, I hope to see some exciting matches. Our team is sending 5 black belts. Jake holds is own with all of them.

GSP eviscerating Jake??? I've heard that before. (Well, maybe not eviscerate. Good word usage. :-)) I don't think that would happen. I would love to see him try.

Jake is a blue collar fighter. He fights anyone. Even though some people don't like his style, I would hope that people can at least appreciate the fact that he just keeps winning fights.

Thanks for your honest opinion. I can appreciate your point of view.

Horrible? Really? Were you booing your TV? (just kidding)

I am hoping that Jake fights Henderson as well.
