Invoking the spirit of BJJ

So I had a shoulder injury about 3 months ago, been back training for about a month now. When I came back I expected to be behind on the times but the exact opposite occured. I found myself securing and dominating positions that I previously had a great deal of trouble with as well as tapping people whom I would stalemate before. It's like there's something extra and subconcious that's giving me better technique because I'm not spazzing or using a great deal of strength. I actually have more energy afterward than I had before. I'm pretty sure I'm getting posessed by a somewhat mediocre grappler but that's way more than enough to help me.

yup had the same thing last year after a back thing put me out of commision, didn't want to fuck it up so I strayed from my usual ugly power judo and relied more on timing and technique, now I like to think I can mix it up better

Sometimes, when I roll, I feel as though I am evoking the spirit of George Burns.

Sometimes you need some time off to let techniques sink in better.

I felt the same after my shoulder injury, some things wen´t alot better than before but alot of other stuff was way off.

yeah sometimes some time off is a good thing to get your head straight. Not for me though lol. Unless it's to recover from a nagging injury.

Sometimes you plateau without realizing it. Taking a break from rolling can help you break out of that plateau. Seems like your (injury-enforced) break solved a problem you didn't even know you had!

This works for all kinds of endevours, physical and intellectual. Think Archimedes only figuring out the displacement solution(the Eureka! story) once he took a break from working on it.

Another way of thinking about this is that doing just about anything has diminishing marginal returns on effort. Taking breaks helps you cheat your way around that fact
