Inverted Guard

Are there resources on the "inverted guard" position?

(either books, video or internet)

Thanks.

About the only thing useful from the "inverted"guard is to roll into a leglock.

You raise an interesting question! This guard intrigues me. There's no instructionals so far as I know, though Kenny Florian was rumored to be working on one. I think Roleta uses this guard a lot.

I've tried it a couple times as a novelty, in inverted spider form. I think you could get a lot of the "spinning" sweeps and subs off it once you got good at it, but I haven't mastered any of those. A guard that would only work well if you were a true spider phenom, I think.

The big benefit to becoming good at this guard is that it makes your open guard a nightmare to pass. Being able to roll over and keep a strong guard = unpassable. If you master the turtle guard as well, you may as well quit practicing defending from mount/side control, cause it won't happen to you any more!

Nick Diaz is pretty good at this inverted guard. It is extremely frustrating to get on the verge of passing and suddenly be in his inverted guard (and think you're doing good), only to find out that he still has tools there.

Ryan Hall (Lloyd Irvin blue belt phenom) has a wicked inverted guard (he calls it his "upside down guard"). He works triangles from it like he's been doing it all his life.

OK, so there aren't resources.

May you post your experiences with the inverted guard? Anytime I do it I just end up in turtle.

What are the goals? (strategy)

How do you reach them? (tactics)

I think Pe de Pano does this and shows some in his guard DVD. I've seen bits of it in Rigan's encyclopedia of BJJ.

Here's a video of Ryan Hall (as mentioned above) explaining why he pulls such a "sloppy" guard and does upside down guard:

You see this guy named Ryan under Lloyd Irving. He goes from the inverted guard. He is only a Blue, but gives Brown Belts a run for their money. it works for him because he is incredibly flexible.

Ooops what Aesopian said.
