If you do the guard right neck flexibility should not be an issue. You simply have to do it right. Doing the backward roll over drills - or the sideways Galvao drills previously mentioned will get you used to tucking your head by instinct and not really having a problem.
My lower back feels strained some times because i play a ton of guard, and inverted guard especially. My neck has never bothered me unless i got neck cranked.

BJJVids,
Any more info on this instructional? Who's the instructor and production company?

no, you're actually more vulnerable from a regular guard.

This thread is a blast from the past. It's interesting to see how Chris Moriarty was a brown belt who was winning tournaments back in 2006. Fast forward to today and he's still a brown belt who just recently lost to Kron Gracie in the finals at Pan Ams. What does this guy have to do to get his black belt?
As for inverted guard, I treat it as a part of my open guard game (not one of my primary weapons). I resort to it when the guy's on the verge of passing, when escaping from north south, and when playing spider guard (but I lose one of my grips).
Gsoares2: I'm having trouble picturing how you initiate your inverted guard. You have the bicep hook and you use your other hand to cup the guy's elbow? Could you describe that in a little more detail? Thanks.

Cool thread, seeing some posts on Hall before people were counting his black belt triangle/leg lock tally.
I think the best points made in this thread about inverted guard were by Zankou, saying that developing a solid inverted guard, in combination with a solid turtle guard, will make passing your open guard just plain disgusting. I've done a LITTLE bit of experimenting with it, and it gives you all kinds of new options and openings from open guard where, without it, you have to go completely defensive.

Look at Ryan Hall's game, and even Jacare has been known to use this positioning.

What is the name of that video at Black Belt Magazine? I can't find anything about it at the website.
