Index of different guards?

Hey everybody, I;ve tried searching everywhere but I can't find some basics on certain guards. WTF is x guard, cross guard (same as x?), DLR...., etc. Also some basic stuff on spider would be nice ( I already know what it is but just some more info on the basics would be nice)

I find that I often can find setups for sweeps/subs with these guards, but I can never find stuff on the basics! The mechanics behind the guard, good situations to use it in, etc. It's seriously a piss off. K thanks for responding guys.

PS anyone here from nova scotia or New brunswick in canada?
http://www.canadagrappling.com/modul...ic&p=1587#1587

There's a big tournament and everyone in the area should go! It'll be my first bjj tournament. I'm gonna do nogi and with gi. If I'm a tellow in judo, Should I compete in the white belt bjj tournament? Also I need to know what the rules are...?

Anyone who can answer some of these questions would be life savers ! Thanks!

Off the top of my head I can think of:

Closed guard
Open guard
De la Riva Guard (read somewhere that this was also called a "vanilla guard")
X-guard
Rubber guard
half guard
butterfly guard
half butterfly guard
quarter guard
spider guard
octopus guard

That's all I can think of at the moment. A lot of these guards I don't use and honestly haven't really been that exposed to. Many of these guards can also be classifed as "open guard". IMO though a traditional open guard relies more on feet on the hips, controlling the ankles, hooking on the inside of the knee, stuff like that.

I myself only ever use a closed guard, half guard, butterfly guard/half butterfly guard, de la Riva guard, spider guard, and that's about it. No way I can give you the basics on all of these. All have their advantages and disadvantages, all have to be passed/defended differently as well for the most part.

If you're looking for basics, IMO the basics are closed guard, open guard, half guard, and maybe after you feel good with those and have a better understanding of sweeps, start messing around with butterfly guard. That's just my opinion. Hope this helps.

scissor guard is another that I've heard of...its a half guard except the leg that is not trapped is across the waist...similar to the way the top leg is during a scissor sweep....eduardo telles does this alot

Joe Rogan referred to a "Donkey" guard on Thursday night. I think he said it when a the guys were in a "doggie style" (sorry guys) position, with the guy on bottom's legs around the other guy. Basically just a totally inverted guard.
