i took my shot at the us open for another gold
i took my shot at taking gold in the blue belt light heavy weight masters today at the US open. I went into this tournament pretty beat up, both mentally and physically. i was tired from getting ready over and over for tournaments. this was my 5th in 6.5 months. i strained my shoulder to the extent where it hurt to lift my hand above shoulder level. i seperated a rib on my left side on tuesday, and my elbow has been dodgy for a few weeks now.
i was looking forward to redeeming myself today. since last year i had a poor showing as a blue belt at the US open. the match opened up with me getting my grips on his collar and elbow. a brief tug of war and then he pulled guard, hard. he practically pulled me all the way over him. i locked down in his half guard and started passing. he was fairly spastic so it took a minute or two to get a rythmn going.
once i had passed once i could feel something wrong with my rib, and he was still pushing and pulling with all of his might. he got me back to half guard and i passed to the other side. at this point he tried some weird foot lock pull thing to get me out of sidemount. i went back to his right side, in the process gave him little room to try and armbar. even though it wasn't even close to caught. the motion to defend and pass was too much for my rib, and it fully dislocated at that point.
i spent the remaining 2.5 minutes or so passing his guard one more time and trying to keep good position as i attempted to get my rib to pop back into place. i won the match 9-0 on the passes.
once time ran out all i could think about was trying to breathe and get ready for the next match. my coach had to put his knee into my back and stretch me out to get the rib back into place. then when i still couldn't get a full breath of air i decided to pull the plug on my attempt at the gold. so ended my competition year. 3 golds, 3 silvers and a bronze today. i went out with bang but not in the way i wanted to.
