I don't think he is overreacting. I stopped by Marcelo's a couple of months ago on my way through Fla. and his wife was saying how one dude was there from Va. just asking about no-gi classes and how Marcelo hates when people only want to do no-gi, and won't train someone that only does no-gi. I thought this is relevant since it came from arguably best no-gi guy on the planet.

Heck if the option were there I would train gi just for the aditional events I could compete in.

I would purposely train with a gi against someone no gi. This is a double edged sword for me - I get more friction if the match goes longer and my opp gets all sweaty, however I handicap myself by giving him more handles and options to control / submit me. This makes me move more methodical, and when I take the gi off, I feel as if I've been unleashed

Personally, if the option is there, go for it!

i love the GI and think that it's more fun, it's a protective barrier from your rolling partner's sweat. where i train everyone who does NOGI with the exception of like 3 people who have been doing wrestling their entire lives all come to the GI classes

I only train nogi. I also only train mount, never guard. Also I dont train in chokes, only joint locks. And only single/double legs, never throws.

OH WAIT, YOU MEAN I SHOULD TRAIN ALL OF THOSE?

Weird. Its... almost as if... they all have merits. Maybe I should train how to hold mount for when im on top, and train for guard for when I get taken down. Maybe I should know a wide variety of takedowns and submissions.

And maybe, just maybe, knowing how to slip out of stuff and explode, and hold subs without gi grips is good. But knowing how to break those grips, and rely on technique to pass a guard and not speed and strength, is good as well....

This I'm going to have to beg to differ - there are instances where I have seen gi grapplers have trouble transitioning to no gi because they're so used to having handles and cloth material to grip. I'm sure the majority of grapplers you've seen may have transitioned well from gi to no gi, however to say that "you never hear a guy" is a little too out there.

no your instructor is not over reacting. You didn't bring a gi to a gi class. simple as that. As for the question " does one NEED to do gi?"

for me the answer is :"If you are the 5%"

see the gi FORCES you to use technique more than no gi. If you are atheletic and strong, you can survive in no gi but not ingi. In essense you are not maximizing your jiu jitsu when you DEPEND on yoru atributes in a no gi situation. YES there are ways to Gi a fiy a no gi game. Like eddi bravo has done. He has expanded a way to SLOW down the no gi game to a point where it mimics a gi game.

If youare one of the 5% that can put his ego aside and use technique instead of size/strength/speed then more power to you. But i have a feeling that like me; youar ein the other 95 percent.
