How important is Gi?

I don't like gi too much, and I never really did. I'm not that good at it, and my style favors no gi so much more, being extremely strong and having somewhat of a wrestling background. I don't do gi too much, and today I didn't bring in my gi to class. My instructor got really mad at me for that, and for doing that in the past here and there, and came up to me and was like, This is not a no gi school. You bring your gi in. Otherwise go to _______ (named a no gi school in the area, don't wanna mention the name though) they are wrestlers, this is brazilian jiu jitsu.
He seemed pretty mad. So, does him mentioning the other school look like he is saying I should leave the team if I don't always do gi? Is it really that important either? I mean, I'm spending my money each month to go to his school. I understand I'm not getting my full money's worth, but is it that big of a deal if a student comes in only for no gi? What do you guys think?

Your instructor's just mad at you and probably doesn't want you to actually leave, but it is a big deal not having your gi, to him. If you don't like gi you should probably switch schools.

I think if you learn BJJ, you should learn the art as a whole.

bottom line though is that youre doing it for fun, which means, do what is most fun.

i used to be like you though, it wasnt until my fifth year of training that I began to really enjoy the gi. Now I absolutely love it. It is an acquired taste, and perhaps you should try to open your mind and learn all the cool techniques associated with it.

it seems to me most of the guys that come from watching ufc decide the gi is useless. the gi makes grappling beautiful, all you have to do is open your mind a bit, and appreciate the art.

No gi is like hamburgers, and gi is like a crepe or fine wine =P

i disagree with your analogy COMPLETELY. saying both are different is one thing, but saying one is crude while the other is graceful is bs. nogi can be just as graceful as gi, for some even more so due to the faster pace.

thats not what i meant.

i meant no gi appeals to the wide masses (pizza, hamburger)

gi requires an open mind (caviar etc. =P )

but i still think gi is a little more graceful too.

no gi can become slip and slide.. lots of speed and power

Well hamoon, as you mentioned about it being pretty much smooth, in my division (white belts, I'm a 2 stripe) and even in a lot of blue belt matches I see at tournaments, the people are a lot more wild and aggressive than they should be in gi. It just makes it very frustrating, its like a full out no gi match, but with someone grabbing onto your gi and not letting go.

i still think you're insinuating that gi is intrinsically superior to nogi i.e. caviar (high-class) vs. pizza (the masses), but whatever.
