ps. I suck at this throw!!
During different decades different styles of uchi mata have been dominant. Right now the tendency is to go to the outside leg, a couple of decades ago it was the inside leg. But there are always top level guys doing it either way. Taller guys tend to prefer the outside leg, shorter the inside, but your mileage will vary. Try it different ways and see what works for you.

I throw it as a roller, very deep with my hips... close to what you define as O uchi mata I guess.

I never really could in gi doing judo but I have had success in nogi. Mostly I'm sure due to them not being attacked with it so often but as well the way I did it was I would always shoot for a simple osoto-makikomi and sometimes when my arm didn't quite get over buddys head I would get stuck and started to hit uchimata. I was so deep in nogi with it that(they came closer) it was almost reflex for a hip throw w/o any other control outside of sleeve arm grip. Hip under, reap and over and they landed so squarely. Surprise actually. Just imo, so much due to the power in my loading left leg gave me options and that they came in tight to stop the initial throw..

I come in from the outside with my target low on the closer leg.

I primarily use uchi either to get them to the mat without an ippon or to finish them when they're on one knee. -ken
