Icon6 Here's my favorite Flying Triangle Set-Up: Off the Duck-Under *VIDEO*

For those who were interested here is my favorite way to hit the Flying Triangle. Takes some practice, but it's impossible to see coming once you get down the timing.

You and Ryan Hall have similar teaching styles. Good job. I'm glad you mentioned to tuck your chin before you hit the ground.

It looks like you are having fun with this. Keep up the good work!

edit...I also like how you said it will "take some practice". How big are you? Do you think it's easier to hit flying triangles on bigger people? Most of my training partners are smaller. Do you ever see big guys hitting this? That "flying" motion will take some work on my part. If I miss it and hit my head; that would suck.

Obviously if you're bigger gravity will have a harsher effect on you, but that doesn't mean you can't do it. I may be 145lbs, but I taught the flying triangle to a heavy set white belt (1 or 2 stripes) that weighed around 220lbs. That guy actually changed a few opinions on who can learn what, lol.

that best way for you to learn this is to start with a basic regular flying triangle and learn that step by step. Here are the steps you should go through with a strong experienced partner:

1) jumping guard. Get comfortable jumping and locking your guard on your opponent. If you having trouble getting height, practice jumping!

2) Have your partner stand with a strong base with one arm bent and held TIGHT to his body (as if he was putting a hand in his front pocket). Now you will jump and try to lock your guard over his arm and around his waist. If you can't lock your guard just squeeze your legs hard enough to keep yourself up/ he can adjust to your jumping ability by bending his knees.

3) After you're comfortable with step 2 you're going to do the exact same thing, just higher. you're now going to jump and lock guard over the shoulder of the arm he has down, and as your weight brings him to the ground you adjust and lock the triangle. Just don't forget to keep that chin tucked in!

after you have the basic flying triangle down then practice the duck under into the triangle from your KNEES until you're comfortable.

Then try it nice and slow standing. I'd suggest using a crash-mat at first if you have one.

Very nice..breakdown of the steps.

Personally I think your explanation of the flying triangle is easier to understand than Dave Camarillo's vide0

Props to Mikey Triangle!

Beautiful set up. Easy to understand as well. I have a couple of blue belt under 76kg tourneys coming up at the end of October. We've been working a lot of the grips, takedowns and pulling guard recently. I'm going to try to spring this surprise on someone in class tomorrow haha!

Nice Vid. You have some good tech out there. I know you say larger guys can still do the flying triangles and I am sure that many can, but when you get over 40 and weigh over 200 lbs sometimes you just have to watch other people do those moves.
