That would be a neat trick catching an armbar from half guard wouldn't it?

Troubleshot some half guard last night at no gi class - question came up about "How do I get out from under half guard when they're smashing me?"
This is obviously referring to when your opponent on top has head & arm control. If you have your legs triangled around their right leg, they are using their left arm around your head for the crossface while their right arm underhooks your left arm, pinning your shoulders to the mat. Classic top half guard stuff.
Instructor answered the question with a simple tech - keep your right leg hooking the half guard, while you use your left foot to push off and bridge your hips up and in towards your opponent. IOW, don't just turn to your side or just bump your hips straight up. By bridging/bumping/upa-ing at an angle towards your opponent, you should be able to create just enough space to feed your left forearm in front and across their throat.
Other method used was after bridging, use your right palm on their forehead to push, exposing their neck, then bringing your wrist in. From here you should have a decent frame.
Now, an awesome detail he mentioned was not to just benchpress / frame straight into their necks. Strong necks / adrenaline / their weight / pressure on top can render this method less effective. Rather than push up, pretend your forearm is a sawblade and literally saw back and forth while creating space. I had this done to me and man, does that make a world of difference (and hurt!).
From here, you should have enough space to pummel in for your underhook. Hip escape, get to your side, and work! Hope this helps.

That is good advice for side control escapes as well. You use the portion of your elbow like a blade under your opponent's neck.

has anyone had trouble getting their back taken when first using deep half guard?
I tried working it tonight, and i got a few sweeps, but one of the better guys took my back.
Is there anything i'm obviously doing wrong?
Just to add, i played it like Jeff Glover shows in his videos. So i got my arm under the same leg that i was controlling with my legs. I'm relatively tall, im not sure if that would have anything to do with it (i doubt it).

Arm under the SAME leg you control with your legs? Not the other leg? My standard deep half guard. If I'm controlling their right leg with my legs...underhook, underhook, UNDERHOOK, with left arm, right arm under their left leg. I'm not sure how I could even get an arm under the same leg my legs are trapping?

I underhooked his right leg with my right arm.
