This is from the Leo Kirby thread on Marcelo's top game - Leo Kirby and Jeff Rockwell were kind enough to respond to some inquiries I had on the UG BJJ subforum about Marcelo's top strategies, and in it is a staple HG pass.
This pass relies on proper top pressure - head & arm control, shoulder pressure, turning their head, and hipping down to keep their leg flat:
hey guys just wanted to share my personal "success" with my new half guard game.
while its still very much in its infancy i felt confident in it.
i competed in no gi this weekend
first match i pulled half guard off the bat, went deep and swept him on the way out the back door, from there it was side control to back mount and got the tap with a RNC
second match pulled half guard again but he stepped out of my x guard attempt after i went deep and we stood up again then i got taken down into side control and screwed up an anaconda choke attempt ending up in N/S and tapping to a darce type choke
so even tho i lost im happy with my performance, and its motivating me more to keep working my half guard game

Congrats, man! Don't you wish all your matches played out like your first match?
You mentioned something about him getting side control and you attempting an anaconda choke from bottom - takes guts to attempt that, man No half guard recovery from there?

thanks man ya i loved my first match haha
ya know, i guess i just got really hungry for a sub while in side control, obviously too hungry lol. i deff should have tried to recover the half guard tho
How do you guys defend this pass:
Usually, I dont even get the underhook, I just keep the lapel tight...
I have Vince's video, and he has a couple of counters, but they aren;t working too well for me.
Normally what I do is just come up with them into quarter (assuming i have teh underhook).
Any other suggestions?
Ah yes, the awesome knee cut pass. I actually attended a Royler Gracie seminar the other day and this exact question was asked.
Royler first firmly stated that if they start this pass with them already having the underhook, you're pretty much already in deep shit (paraphrasing him of course). The fact that they have the underhook means they can effectively flatten you out and keep you from effectively using your hips to shrimp or hip escape in response.
Please, please by all means try to obtain this underhook. From there you can get on your side and use your top knee to bump them and either take their back, or end up in base.
I've used some of Vince's counters to some degree of success, but nowhere near the success I have when I get the underhook. It really comes down to a certain point when they're passing your half guard where the percentages are heavily in their favor - sure you can regain half guard with an overhook somehow, but the chances are MUCH lower than if you had the underhook. Hope this helps!
