Do any of you have any general advice or rules of thumb to follo when fighting against a good half butterfly, and fighting against a guy with good leg work?

If you have a specific pass that would be even better.

A video of said pass and I will buy you an E-Coke!

Vs half butterfly I pass to the other side, I get the underhook on the same of the FREE leg as he utilizes his hook and as he lifts me I shoot that same side leg under and across me landing in modified scarf hold.

For example, my right leg is trapped in the opponent's half guard so I have my right arm underhooking his left arm and my left arm cross facing him. As he works the butterfly hook in I will use my left arm to pummel and get an underhook under HIS RIGHT arm. I will then shoot my left leg across his body all the way through and "baseball slide" into modified scarf hold.

If your going to cross face from the top the best way to pass would be to continue all the way Pin Pass where you put your body acroos his body and face his legs. Pass from there. If he continues from there with the butterfly you will be able to pass to mount or side mount much easier.

Learn the lockdown with your legs first. This will destroy the base of the guy on top and make things a lot easier for you. Next get your underhooks and do the whip up to get on your side. From there look at Eddie Bravo's system, he uses the old school and the electric chair, both are proven and will really improve your game. Rubber guard - research it and you will have a leg up on the competition.

I have recently been working more half-guard with the half-butterfly hook and consequently finding myself in x-guard a lot, it has really improved my sweeping % options from hal-guard on the bottom.

From top, my go to is turning to face towards the legs... it gives me the most trouble when i am on the bottom, so i use it when on top as well.
