That said, you are right, it's an awesome move, and sitting right there from the z guard.

On Kesting's dvd he describes this move as an entrance into the general leglock game. And so Kirby's move into the "leglock" guard is his approach. Myself, I tend to prefer the kneebar (particularly since the leglock guard isn't that great when you can't use heelhooks), so that's what I find myself trying for. You could also toehold them ... basically the whole leglock game is there.
what is 'z gaurd?'

Zankou or Aesopian,
In regards to the back roll sweep, flavio almeida teaches it to put the cross gripped sleeve "in your pocket" instead of circling it over your head, have you tried this? what do you find more effective... My main problem is getting their weight over me so i can execute the back roll if i can get them over me i don't stall and can complete it, i have tried really committing to the scissor sweep but it's like they don't have to drive into me very hard to stop it, which means i am not getting the momentum to pull them in and get their weight on me

Yeah it's interesting that Almeida teaches it that way. I don't have much luck with that put it in the pocket approach for the reason you mention, the guy stays back too far (though it's an awesome way to set up the butterfly sweep, btw). Instead I use the "sweep the arm over me" approach.

I think if you got really good at the scissors sweep portion, Almeida's approach might work well, but it doesn't seem as reliable as the circling arm entrance to the backroll. It seems to rely more on timing and reaction, which if you're not some crazy good and athletic black belt, is not as good.

funny thing is on his DVD each move he shows first and then breaks it down in slow step by step fashion, in the clip before he breaks it down he circles the arm over the head, in the step by step breakdown he does the "put the hand in your pocket"

Half-Guard Progress

I drilled the scissor sweep to back roll combo last night, and my instructor thought it was pretty funny bacause the guy i was trying to do it on, was about 120lbs heavier than me.

I managed to get the scissor portion working a couple of times, but just couldn't get his weight on top of me to do the back roll, i did have another try with a smaller white belt, but he wouldn't defend the scissor properly but was opening him self up to all other kinds of sweeps.

Also my instructor added a detail to the scissor sweep that i was doing, when you do a bit of a crunch and put your elbow over their arm, you should pull the arm abit with your cross grip so you are stretching his arm out a bit... it seemed to make it a little easier... your thoughts?

Bro, I wish I could help ya but I never get this scissors sweep to go except against newbs. I use it as a setup. The only thing I will say is that it seems to work by the same mechanics as a hip bump sweep, not a true scissors sweep -- you almost turn on your stomach as you twist over the arm and throw your hips in. Try executing it that way for better results?

thanks, will give it a bit more of a go... i realize it's difficult to get but my half-guard scissor is so weak that i am not getting the reaction necessary to fold up and do the back-roll... if i tell the guy ok just put your weight over on me to defend the sweep and they do what they are told, then i can execute the sweep, it's just getting the reaction live is difficult.
