Great Masters Dream of BJJ in Olympics

Just wanted to shout out an article that's up on Tatame, it's highlighting some of the work my instructor is doing with the the grand masters to get Jiu Jitsu into the Olympics as an exhibition sport (for now).

Worth a read and everyone's support.

Great Masters dream with BJJ in Olympics :: TATAME

The guy on the left of the photo would be the person beating me up daily, the man in the middle of the photo is Joao Alberto Barreto (the most senior ranking person in Jiu Jitsu today) and the third is Sylvio Behring.

Was actually thinking about this topic yesterday lol. would love to see it in the olympics, If judo can be an olympic sport theres no reason that BJJ couldnt. Would definately increase interest in the art and be good for competition although it would probably be held back due to the lower number of countries where it is popular compared to Judo.

My main worry is that the International BJJ feds would change the competition rules and ruin it for competitors (like what has happened with Judo, friend of mine plays judo and hates all the changes), Not really Sure what they could change to do that though.

If BJJ was an Olympic sport it would cause BJJ to much bigger worldwide, it would also create something that has the same name as BJJ but wouldn't be the same as what you practice now. Just look at Judo.

I think the problem w/ bjj in the olympics is the number of participating countries able to field competitive teams. Right now it looks about like 3. That's not going to cut it for the IOC.

What is the point in essentially gifting Brazil a bunch of medals?

I would be all for it except I dont trust the governing bodies to not ruin it. I dont know much about Judo but amateur boxing is a fucking joke now because of the Olympics. It would be great to have it in the olympics as it is now, but who knows what kind of asinine shit they would do to it.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or submission wrestling should certainly be an Olympic sport before MMA.

I think submission wrestling first and foremost, though, because it is less regional and of course, it is the origins from whence freestyle wrestling sprang, in part.

Exactly. If they're talking gi bjj, it's even less likely. Let's remember that bjj and judo have a common root that split not too long ago in history. And when judo became an Olympic sport, they really changed it a lot, and the newaza suffered. So what's gonna happen with bjj, are they gonna ban whatever leglocks are still legal? Make up random rules to supposedly make it more crowd friendly? Make it more like judo? If so, then why even bother? There's already judo.

Basically I don't want the Olympics to do to bjj what it did to Judo, boxing, and wrestling with their rules. I think bjj's strength has been the ability to incorporate all techniques, and I think the Olympics could undo that, even if it does popularize that (which it won't, think how many obscure Olympic sports there are that nobody does). Fact is the Olympics are less relevant than they used to be, despite the ungodly sums of money that are spent on them, and all the pomp and ceremony. Most sports already have world championships on non-Olympic years (bjj included), so the only thing you gain is the cache of saying it's an Olympic sport. Great, you're right up there with curling and synchronized swimming.

Same goes for sub grappling if they do no gi, like the FILA comps that are going on right now. How many techniques you think they're gonna ban? How long after that before people stop training them?

All in all, little to gain, lots to risk. I say screw the Olympics.

I don't think BJJ would benefit from being an Olympic sport. I've heard Judo as a martial art has gone downhill after being an Olympic sport. Too much changes to have it more pleasing to spectators.
